The Jake Is Unkind Once Again

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/12/21)---Concordia controlled possession time in the offensive half, put up more shots and more shots on goal than Neb. Wesleyan, but couldn't find the game-winning goal and lost 2-1 in overtime to the Prairie Wolves.

The Cobbers outshot Neb. Wesleyan 17-6 in total shots and 10-3 in shots on goal but were stymied in the final third and lost for the third straight game. CC is now 2-3-0 on the season. All three of the Concordia losses have come at home, and Concordia hasn't been able to take a lead in all three of those contests.

Concordia held a 6-3 edge in shots in the fist half, but the teams went to the halftime break deadlocked at 0-0.

The Prairie Wolves opened the scoring in the 62nd minute when they were able to break free from the Cobber defense on a counter attack. Concordia had a free kick from the left wing and sent a service into the penalty area. The Neb. Wesleyan goalie was able to latch on to the cross and then quickly throw the ball to an attacker just inside the mid line. A couple touches later and the Prarie Wolves were able to take advantage of a 2-on-1 and convert for a 1-0 lead at the 61:43 mark.

Concordia tied the game less than eight minutes later when junior Telvin Vah went solo on the NWU defense. He settled a pass off of free kick from Tyson Aberle on the left wing – at the top of the penalty area. Vah then turned and beat a pair of defenders to get to the end line. He took two more dribbles and then hammered a shot into the top part of the net on the short side of the goal.

The equalizer at 69:15 was Vah's team-leading fourth of the season. His four goals are tied for third most in the MIAC.

Concordia dominated the final 20 minutes of play – outshooting the Prairie Wolves 6-0 and gaining the only corner kick of the final stretch of regulation.

The Cobbers started the first overtime the same way they ended the second half, by putting pressure on the NWU goal.

Concordia got stung in the eighth minute of the opening extra period when they failed to clear a ball inside the penalty area. The ball went directly to a Neb. Wesleyan attacker who fired a shot on goal. CC goalie Erick Torres was able to dive to his left and make the full-out stretch to stop the initial offering, but the rebound was slammed home by a Prairie Wolves' player who was left unattended at the top of the 6-yard box and blasted the ball home for the game winner.

Vah led all players with five total shots and four shots on frame. Freshmen Gavin Groshelle and Celvin Atubra both had a pair of shots to post their season-best total.

UP NEXT: Concordia will open up conference play when they travel to St. Paul to take on Macalester on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The Scots are 2-3-0 on the season and are coming off a 6-2 win over Colorado College on Sunday.
