Vah Nets Overtime Winner

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/17/21)---Telvin Vah erased the sting of the Cobbers' late game-winning goal loss on Wednesday by scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to earn the Cobbers a 4-3 victory over Augsburg.

The win was Concordia's third of the spring season as they up their record to 3-1.

The Cobbers and Auggies went against the theory that "soccer is a low-scoring offensive game. The teams gave the crowd inside Jake Christiansen Stadium their money's worth as they combined for seven goals, 30 total shots and 17 shots on goal. Throw in six yellow cards and there was nothing but action on a sunny Saturday in Moorhead.

Junior Nate Weaver started the scoring spree early when he headed home a shot that caromed off the crossbar in the fifth minute of play. Vah looked to complete a quick counter as he hammered a shot from 15-yards out that belted against the crossbar. The ball bounced to Weaver who headed it past the goalie who had turned to watch Vah's original shot.

The 1-0 lead would be short-lived when Augsburg countered with a goal 33-seconds later.

The 1-1 tie would be short-lived when defender Matthew Nemer hit a laser with his left foot that glanced off the inside of the right post and into the net at the 9:15 mark. Nemer's second goal of the spring came from a corner kick. The initial cross was cleared to Nemer who was standing by the left corner of the penalty area. He proceeded to take a dribble and drive the ball off the right post and into the net.

The game would head into the halftime break deadlocked at 2-2 when Augsburg scored at 30:06.

The Auggies would take their first lead of the game at 63:24. The goal that gave them the 3-2 lead also came from a corner kick. The ball bounced towards the top of the box where it was driven across the goal area. The ball bounced off of an unsuspecting Auggie player and went into the net.

The Cobbers appeared to be headed their second straight 1-goal loss as time ticked under the 6-minute mark. Concordia was able to tie the game after turning the Auggies over just inside the midline. The Cobbers took possession and had the ball find Vah who settled it, turned to his right and found Weaver by the top of the penalty area on the right wing. Weaver took a touch inside and then pounded a head-high shot that whistled past the goalie and into the net at 85:38.

Both teams had one chance in the final three minutes of regulation before Vah claimed the game winner in the fifth minute of the first OT period.

The ball was played from the Cobbers' defensive end of the field and found Sondre Rygg's foot at the top of the penalty area. Rygg, who scored CC's goal on Wednesday, was able to collect the ball and find enough space to flick the ball to Vah at the penalty spot. Vah held off a pair of Auggie defenders and then pasted the ball into the left side of the net.

The goal was Vah's second of the spring and ninth point in four games.

Concordia held the advantage in all stat categories on the scoresheet. CC outshot the Auggies 19-11 in total shots and 12-5 in shots on goal. The Cobbers also had six corners compared to four for Augsburg.

Cobber keeper Noah Sahr turned aside a pair of shots and was solid in taking control of the penalty area as he picked up his third win of the year.
