An OT Season-Opening Thriller

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (3/27/21)---Concordia started its 2021 spring season in thrilling fashion as they beat Jamestown 4-3 in overtime. The Cobbers scored three goals after the halftime break – including the game winner from Brendan Koplin in the sixth minute of the extra session.

Concordia stepped on the field in an accrual game for the first time since the fall of 2019 and produced an offensive showcase. The Cobbers scored the first two goals of the game, then watched as the Jimmies tied the contest in the 76th minute with back-to-back goals less than eight minutes apart.

The Cobbers then responded with their third goal with 10:49 left in regulation before Jamestown equalized for the second time in the 84th minute of play.

Koplin then got the game winner on an unassisted strike at the 95:50 mark. It was an extra special marker because it was also Koplin's first collegiate goal.

Freshman Michael Matthews also scored his first collegiate goal for Concordia when he put the first Cobber goal of the season on the board at 33:25. It was the only goal of the first half and was assisted by Patrick Smith.

Sondre Rygg staked the Cobbers to a 2-0 lead when he finished off a ball from Matthews at the 65:33 mark. Telvin Vah gave CC a 3-2 lead with his third career goal at 79:11.

The total shots were nearly even for the two teams. The Cobbers were outshot 13-12 in overall shots in the game but held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Sophomore goalie Noah Sahr made a pair of saves in goal to pick up his seventh career victory.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have almost a 2-week break before returning to action when they play Bethel at Northwestern in St. Paul on Thursday, Apr. 8 at 6:30 p.m.
