When You're Hot, You're Hot

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/11/19)---The saying goes: "when you're hot, you're hot". Consider Sam Gess and the Cobbers officially hot.

Concordia scored a goal in each half, Gess added to his impressive season goal total, and Concordia blanked Macalester 2-0 in St. Paul.

The win is the fourth straight for the Cobbers and it marks only the second time in program history that CC has won on the Scots home field.

Concordia is now 8-3-1 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play. The eight overall wins is the most by a Cobber team since 2010 when Concordia played in the championship game of the MIAC playoffs.

Macalester loses for only the second time in the past seven games and is now 5-4-4 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAC.

The game was mainly contested between the penalty areas with the teams combining for only two shots on goal in the first half and five total shots in the game.

Concordia was able to take control of the game, and force the Scots into an attacking mode, when Nate Weaver was played in behind the Macalester defense by Casey Haldis and was able to chip the ball over the head of the onrushing goalie.

The goal at 26:49 was Weaver's eighth of the season. That total is one more than he had in all of last season and is the third most in the MIAC.

Weaver now has 20 points on the year which gives the Cobbers a pair of 20-point scorers for the season. The last time that happened was in 2001 when All-Region performer Chance Buzzell led the team with 29 points and freshman Dustin Allard had 27.  

Neither team had many scoring chances in the final 18 minutes of the first half. Macalester had the only shot on goal and that came in the 44th minute off of a header which was easily stopped by Cobber goalie Noah Sahr.

Gess doubled the Cobber lead in the 12th minute of the second half. The Cobbers were able to secure a corner kick and then Gess got free to head home an open chance of the ensuing restart. Dylan Michaud was credited with the assist on the play as he served the ball into the penalty area.

The goal was Gess' MIAC-leading 13th of the season and ninth in the last four games. The 13 goals is a career high for Gess whose previous single-season best goal total was three. His 13 goals are the most by a Cobber player since Justin Foss had 15 in 2008.

The last half of the second period belonged to Sahr who came up with a pair of game-saving stops. The biggest stop came off a shot that was labeled for the top corner of the net but Sahr was able to extend himself, get a hand on the ball and turn it over the crossbar.

Sahr finished with three stops in the game and recorded his first conference shutout. He is now 5-2-1 on the season.

Concordia was outshot 10-5 in the game but the majority of that came in the second half when CC was up 2-0 and went into a more defensive system.

Gess led Concordia with two shots in the game.
