Second-Half Scoring Spree

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/29/19)---Concordia exploded for four goals in the second half and bettered St. Scholastica 4-1.

The win continues the Cobbers' success in non-conference play. Concordia is now 5-3-1 in all games and 5-0-1 against non-conference opponents. CC has also been successful against UMAC opponents. Concordia has played four schools from the UMAC conference and is 3-0-1 in those games.

Concordia held the majority of the play in the first play but couldn't break through on the scoreboard. The Cobbers held an 8-1 edge in shots in the first period and had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The game changed 10 minutes into the second half when senior Sam Gess scored the first of his two consecutive goals. For both goals Gess was in the right place at the right time as he took advantage of Scholastica miscues.

Gess put the Cobbers on the board when he took a pass from sophomore Nate Weaver at the top of the penalty area, took a touch that went around the oncoming goalie and then tapped it into the open net.

Gess doubled the lead less than six minutes later when he pounced on a rebound and knocked home the eventual game winner from 12 yards out at the 60:17 mark.

The 2-goal game pushes Gess' season goal total to six and he now has a team-best 17 points.

The Saints got to within one goal when they finished off a rebound of their own at 70:40.

Concordia finished off the game with a pair of goals in a 6-minute span. Weaver scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season at 76:30 and the Nigaba Olivier netted his first collegiate goal at 82:13. Sondre Rygg picked up the assist on both the final goals and Weaver added his fourth point of the day on Olivier's goal.

Weaver's four points brings his season total to 17 which ties Gess for the team lead and is a new single-season best. He had 15 points in his freshman season in 2018.

Concordia outshot Scholastica 17-4 in total shots and 7-4 in shots on goal. Gess led all players with five shots and Telvin Vah added four from his midfield position.

Keith Sullivan turned aside three shots to record his third win of the year.
