Same Result, Different Scoring Scheme

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/05/19)---Concordia flipped the scoring script from their season-opening win on Saturday and beat Minn.-Morris 4-1 in the home opener.

Against Crown, the Cobbers used a 5-point night from senior Sam Gess to down the Storm 3-0. Concordia used three different players – and an own goal – to down the Cougars on Thursday.

The one constant in both games was the Cobbers' offense dominance. Concordia outshot Morris 32-4 in total shots and held a decided 20-3 margin in shots on goal. CC has now outshot its first two UMAC opponents 66-8 in total shots and 35-3 in shots on frame.

The win pushes the Cobbers' season record to 2-0 which marks the first time since the 2010 season that CC has started a year with consecutive victories.

Senior Aronah Mukhtar and sophomore defender Tyson Aberle took the drama out of the game with goals in the first 16 minutes of play. Both scores came from crosses, and both were finished off from inside the 6-yard box. Mukhtar received the ball on his foot from a cross and was able to fire a shot between the Morris goalie between his legs for his first goal of the season. Mukhtar's strike came at the 4:42 mark and set the tone for the rest of the game. While Mukhtar slotted his shot on the ground from in close, Aberle hammered home a serve into the top of the goal. The goal at 15:47 was his first of the season and second of his career.          

The final three goals of the game would come in the first 14 minutes of the second half. Morris got to within one goal when they scored their first goal of the season at the 48:23 mark.

The Cougars also scored the fourth goal of the game as they accidentally put the ball in their own net after a Cobber attacker served the ball into the penalty area. Concordia had several players converging on the cross and the accidental deflection beat the goalie at 52:18. Sophomore Nate Weaver finished off the scoring when he notched his second goal of the season. Once again it came from a cross, and once again he was able to tap the ball into the net from within five yards of goal. The strike was set up by Sam Gess – who also assisted on Weaver's first goal of the year against Crown. Mukhtar was also awarded an assist on the final tally as he finished with a 3-poin game.  

Weaver, Mikhtar and Telvin Vah all had four shots to pace the CC offense.

Freshman goalie Noah Sahr made a pair of saves to record his first collegiate win.

UP NEXT: Concordia will try and make it three straight wins to start the season when they host Neb. Wesleyan on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m.
