Cobbers Tie Royals

STORY LINE: Concordia outshot Bethel but both teams only put up one goal on the board and the Cobbers battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie in the penultimate game of the 2018 season. Concordia opened the scoring 32:32 into the second half but then the Royals tied the game less than three minutes later before the teams went scoreless through the two 10-minute overtime periods.

RECORDS: The Cobbers have only lost once in the last five games and are now 7-9-1 overall. Concordia has their conference record moved to 1-7-1. Bethel stops their two-game losing skid and are now 4-11-1 in all games and a similar 1-7-1 in league play.

LATE-GAME DRAMA: Bethel had a goal called back with under 45-seconds remaining in the second overtime. The Royals delivered a dead ball into the penalty area where it was flicked on by a header and then put into the net. The associate referee raised his flag because of offside on the touch after the header.  

PLENTY OF SHOTS: The game went back-and-forth from penalty area to penalty area with the teams combining for 27 shots in the contest. Concordia recorded at least three shots in all of the periods except the first overtime. The Cobbers finished the game with a 15-12 edge in total shots and put up a high-water mark of six shots in the second half. CC held a 3-2 edge in shots in the second overtime period when both teams had chances to get the win.

ARONAH ADDS ANOTHER: Junior Aronah Mukhtar added to his team-leading point total when he got Concordia on the board at the 75:32 mark. His unassisted tally was his seventh of the season and brought his point total to 17. He has now recorded a single goal in three of the team's past five games. Mukhtar has seven goals and three assists and is also tied for the Cobber lead in goals scored with freshman Nate Weaver.

THE FIRST TIE OF THE YEAR: The 1-1 deadlock was the Cobbers' first tie of the season. Concordia has now had at least one tie in eight of the past 10 seasons and in three of the past five conference campaigns.

UP NEXT: Concordia will finish off the 2018 season when they host St. Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m. The Cardinals are 5-11-1 in all games and 2-7-0 in conference contests and are coming off a 4-1 loss at home against Carleton on Tuesday.
