Capping Off A Winning Weekend

STORY LINE: Senior Austin Peterson was in the right place at the right time as he fired home a shot from 15 yards out in the second overtime to give the Cobbers a 2-1 non-conference win over St. John's. Peterson had the ball drop to his feet after Concordia was awarded a free kick from 45 yards out which was subsequently served into the penalty area. The serving pass then ricocheted off several players before Peterson stepped up to push it into the net.

The Cobbers opened the scoring at the 56:47 mark of the second half after the teams battled to a 0-0 tie through the opening 45 minutes of play. The Johnnies posted the game-tying goal with 3:37 left in regulation on a goal-mouth scramble with the ball being tapped in from two yards out.

RECORDS: The win is the second of the weekend for Concordia who beat St. Olaf in a league game on Saturday. It is also the third victory in the last four games for CC. The contest on Sunday was played as a non-conference game to give both teams an extra game on the schedule. SJU beat the Cobbers 3-0 earlier in the year in Collegeville in a game that was a part of the conference schedule. Concordia is now 6-8-0 on the season. The Johnnies lose in double OT for the second straight game and fall to 8-4-1 on the year.

STORY OF SIX: Concordia's six wins on the season are one more than they had in all of the 2017 season and tie for the most in a single season since 2010. The Cobbers also had six wins in 2016 and 2012.

I WANT TO RIDE MY BICYCLE: Concordia's opening goal of the game was the prettiest of the season as junior Sam Gess was able to score on a rare overhead bicycle kick opportunity. Like the game winner, the ball was served into the area from a free kick just inside the half line. Henry Schaefer's cross was flicked on by Austin Peterson where Gess was standing with his back to the goal 12 yards from the net. Gess let the ball bounce above his head and then jumped up and hammered the ball into the lower right corner of the goal. The tally was Gess' second of the season and second straight on consecutive Sundays.

GAME WINNING VIKING RULES: Austin Peterson completed his 3-point afternoon with the game winner in the second OT session. It was his second goal of the season – both of which have been game winners. He also scored the winning marker against Simpson on Sept. 9. Peterson now has scored two goals in each of his three seasons in maroon and gold.

SUNDAY GOALIE SWITCH: For the second straight Sunday, junior Keith Sullivan started in goal for the Cobbers and for the second straight Sunday he left the game early due to an injury. Last week Sullivan left the game at Viterbo in the first half and sophomore Jackson Carr came on in relief to earn the win. Against St. John's Sullivan made it into the second half before being replaced at the 76:44 mark after he made a diving save and then collided with a St. John's player trying to corral the rebound. Carr once again entered the game and earned the victory in relief. He played the final 26:29 and made four saves to record his sixth win of the season.

STAT STUFF: Concordia was outshot 12-8 in total shots for the game and the Johnnies held a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Sam Gess and Austin Peterson both had two shots to lead CC.

UP NEXT: Concordia will finish off their non-conference schedule when they host Northwestern on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. The Cobbers are currently 5-2 in non-league games. Northwestern is 4-9-1 on the season and lost 4-0 to St. Thomas on Oct. 12.
