Weaving A Season-Opening Split

LINCOLN, Neb. (9/02/18)---Freshman Nate Weaver scored all three goals in Concordia's opening weekend of the 2018 season. The Cobbers came away with a split decision as they beat Buena Vista 2-1 on Friday and then lost at Neb. Wesleyan by an identical score of 2-1.

Concordia fell behind early on Friday as Buena Vista scored in the fifth minute of play. Weaver brought the Cobbers level a little over five minutes later when he scored his first collegiate goal at 9:33. Sam Gess collected the first of his three assists on the weekend on the game-tying goal.

Weaver would finish off the scoring in the opener just after the midway point of the opening half. He found the back of the net at the 25:37 mark to give CC a 2-1 lead. Gess collected the dime on the eventual game winner.

Neither team was able to come up with a shot on goal in the second half which was exactly what Concordia was looking for as they closed out the game with the 2-1 win.

Sophomore goalie Jackson Carr didn't make a save in earning his fourth career victory. Weaver led the team in total shots and shots on goal. He finished three total shots and made the most of his two shots on frame.

Concordia outshot the Beavers 11-9 for the game and held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.

The second game of the weekend was the mirror image of the opener for Concordia as the Cobbers scored first but then watched as Neb. Wesleyan netted the game-tying goal less than four minutes later and earn the game-winning goal later in the game.

Weaver scored the first goal of the game at 31:16 on an assist from Gess. The Prairie Wolves then tied the game at the 32:12 mark. NWU would get the game winner less than 20 minutes into the second half at the 64:03 mark.

Carr got the start in goal for CC and made four saves. Concordia had six total shots and four shots on goal. Weaver, Aronah Mukhtar and Austin Peterson all had two total shots in the game.

Concordia will travel to Minn.-Morris on Tuesday, Sept. 4 for a non-conference game at 5:00. The Cobbers will then host Wis.-Superior on Friday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. and then Simpson on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 12 p.m.
