ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/19/17)---Wyatt Holwagner's goal in the 72nd minute gave Concordia a 2-1 win at Northwestern (Minn.) in the Cobbers' final non-conference game of the season.
Concordia scored the first and last goals of the game as they remain unbeaten in their last two games. The Cobbers are now 4-8-2 on the season. The loss is the second straight for the Eagles who fall to 7-5-2 for the season.
Senior Jacob Schmidt got Concordia on the board just past the halfway point of the first half. He was able to get the ball past the Northwestern keeper at the 26:16 mark. The goal was Schmidt's third of the season.
The Cobbers enjoyed a 6-4 edge in shots in the first half as the teams created offensive chances on both ends.
The second half was a more physical affair with the teams combining for five cards and 12 fouls.
Northwestern tied the game at the 53:54 mark and then the game turned in favor of the Cobbers six minutes later when a Northwestern player was issued his second yellow card of the game and was sent off at 59:58.
It took Concordia 12 minutes to take advantage of the extra man. Holwagner came up with his first goal of the season at 71:56 to record the game-winning goal.
The Cobbers survived a corner kick and a pair of shots on goal in the final 10 minutes of play to keep the one-goal advantage intact.
Senior goalie Charlie Trochlil made four saves in the game to earn his second win of the season.
Concordia was outshot 16-11 in the game but both teams had six shots on goal. Schmidt and Aronah Mukhtar both had three total shots on two shots on goal in the game to lead the Concordia offense.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS – AND GAMES: Concordia allowed fewer than two goals for the sixth time this season. The Cobbers are 4-1-1 in those games.
SAVING HIS BEST FOR LAST: After being held off the board in the first 10 games of the season, senior Jacob Schmidt has now scored a goal in three of the team's last four games.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will now finish off the season with three straight conference games. CC will kick off the final stretch of the regular season when they host Augsburg on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.
