Rabid Defense Nets First MIAC Win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/30/17)--- Justin Froslie's converted penalty kick at the end of the first half proved to be the difference in Concordia's 1-0 win at Carleton.

The Cobber defense put together one of its best performances of the season as they posted their first shutout in conference play and second of the entire season.

The win snaps a two-game losing streak for CC and moves their overall record to 3-6-1. The victory is the first MIAC win of the year for the Cobbers who are now 1-3-1 in league play. Carleton loses its third straight one-goal decision in conference play and is now 6-4-0 in all games and 1-3-0 in the MIAC.

Concordia was outshot 17-5 in total shots for the game but most of the Carleton opportunities came from outside the penalty and the shots were contested, or blocked, by the CC defense.

The Cobbers netted the game winner after Froslie received possession of the ball 30 yards out from the Carleton goal. He took one dribble and then delivered a ball that knifed through the seam of the Knight defense to an on-running Jacob Schmidt who made a diagonal run from his left wing position. Schmidt reached the ball first and was about to take a touch towards goal but he was knocked off the ball by an on-coming Carleton defender. The referee ruled the charge to be a penalty and gave CC the spot kick.

Froslie stepped up and made good on the ensuing penalty kick at the 40:16 mark. The goal was Froslie's first collegiate goal for the Cobbers.

The second half was played between the penalty areas with Carleton breaking free for an occasional chance on goal. The Knights had five shots on goal in the final 45 minutes of play as Concordia held tight to the shutout.

The best chance of the final half came courtesy of the counterattack. Junior Spencer Lancaster was able to step into the passing lane and intercept a pass at midfield. He then went in on a breakaway from 50 yards out. His shot from the top of the penalty area beat the Carleton goal but clanked off the inside of the left post, rolled along the goal line and then just outside the right post.

Froslie led the Cobbers with two shots.

Jackson Carr turned aside six shots to record his second collegiate shutout.

PARTY LIKE IT'S 1999: The win for the Cobbers marked the first time that Concordia had won at Carleton since 1999 a streak that encompassed nine games.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have eight days to rest and heal up before hitting the road to play at Simpson (Iowa) on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 12:00 p.m.
