Two-Goal Outburst Not Enough

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/12/16)—The good news for Concordia is that they were able to score two goals in an 11-minute span in the second in their game against Augsburg. The bad news was that the two-goal outburst came after the Cobbers found themselves in a four-goal deficit.

Concordia was never able to crawl completely out of the four-goal hole and lost 4-2 to the Auggies.

The loss is the second straight home conference defeat and drops the Cobbers overall record to 4-8-1. CC is 0-7-0 in the MIAC. Augsburg is a similar 4-8-1 in all games but is now 2-3-2 in league play.

Augsburg scored a goal in the seventh minute of play to grab a 1-0 lead it would be one of only two shots on goal before they struck for their second goal at 35:12.

The Cobbers had a pair of chances from inside the 6-yard box when the game was 1-0 but each time they were denied by the Augsburg goalie.

Augsburg then repeated their early-half scoring success by adding a third goal just 4:01 into the second period of play. They would double their halftime lead by netting a fourth at the 52:41 mark.

Concordia started to generate more chances with 20 minutes to play in regulation.

The Cobbers got on the board at 70:49 when sophomore Austin Peterson took possession of the ball with his back to goal at the top of the Augsburg penalty area on the left side of goal just above the penalty arc. He then turned to his left and sent a right-footed shot just inside the left post.

The goal was Peterson's first collegiate tally and came off an assist from freshman Henry Schaefer who earned his first collegiate point on the play.

Concordia would cut the lead to two goals in the 82nd minute when Peterson knocked a pass back to junior Jacob Schmidt from the midfield stripe. Schmidt then connected with freshman Sam Gess who lofted a pass over the defense and into the path of Aronah Mukhtar.

Muhktar fought off a holding challenge from the Augsburg defender, raced into the clear and then lofted a shot over the oncoming goalie.

The goal at 81:51 was Mukhtar's first collegiate goal.

The game then turned into a physical affair with five yellow cards and one red card being handed out in the final nine minutes of play.

Augsburg outshot Concordia 14-9 in total shots and 11-7 in shots on goal. Gess had a team-high three shots on goal while Peterson finished with a pair of on-goal attempts.

Concordia junior goalie Alan Scheuermann made seven stops for the 90 minutes.
