Winning Defensive Formula Returns

MORRIS, Minn. (9/21/16)—Concordia returned to its early-season success formula and beat Minn.-Morris 1-0 in a non-conference game in Morris.

The Cobbers limited the Cougar's chances, scored the game-winning goal just before the break and recorded their two-game losing streak.

Concordia only allowed one shot on goal as they picked up their third shutout and third win of the season. The Cobbers even their season record at 3-3-1 and are now 3-1-1 in non-conference games.

The fact that all three of Concordia's wins have been shutouts has been no surprise as the Cobbers stressed team defense from the onset of the season. CC was last in the MIAC in goals allowed last season. The conceded 44 goals in 2015 which was 17 more than the next closest team.

The 2016 season has been a 180-degree turn for the Cobbers. Concordia has only allowed six goals in their first seven games of the year and has only allowed more than one goal in only one game.

The game against Morris was more of a midfield affair with neither team being able to create chances in the final 20 yards of the field.

Concordia scored the lone goal of the game when senior Luis Martinez took a pass from freshman Max Cook and fired home his first goal of the season. Martinez' strike at the 41:52 mark would be all that the stingy CC defense would need.

The Cobbers only allowed three total shots in the final 45 minutes of play. Of those three shots, only one was on target and forced Concordia goalie Alan Scheuermann to make a save.

Concordia outshot the Cougars 7-5 in total shots and 2-1 in shots on goal. Sam Gess and Matthew Fulks both had a team-high two total shots while Gess and Martinez had the only shots on frame for CC.

Scheurmann made one stop to earn his second win, and second shutout, of the season.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will return to conference play when they play at St. Olaf on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 3:30 p.m.
