No Answer After Halftime

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/28/15)—Concordia allowed two unanswered goals around the halftime break and lost to Gustavus 3-1 in the final home game of the 2015 season.

The teams traded goals in the first eight minutes of play before the Gusties captured the game winner less than eight minutes before the break and then added an insurance goal 9:35 after the break to grab the conference victory.

Concordia ends the MIAC regular season with a mark of 2-8-0 while the Gusties improve to 2-4-3 in conference play.

The game, which was played in 30-degree temperatures with a 15-20 mph wind started at a fast pace. Gustavus, who went with the wind in the opening half, got on the board at the 2-minute mark when an attacker poked home a goal mouth scramble after a winger delivered the ball into the Cobber penalty area.

The Cobbers wasted little time in responding. Sage Thronbrugh capped off a classic counterattack by burying a 20-yard shot into the far right corner of the net. Defender Nick Koerbitz played the ball to midfielder Matthew Fulks who found Thornbrugh free on the left wing. Thornbrugh outraced the Gustie defense before burying the ball into the net from just outside the penalty area.

Thronbrugh's goal at the 7:15 mark was his third of the season and pushes his 2015 point total to 11. He has now had at least 10 points in two of his three seasons at Concordia.

Koerbitz earned his team-leading eighth assist on the play. He is currently tied for first in the MAC in assists.

The teams then traded great chances with Gustavus having the majority of possession while the Cobbers were content to break with speed on the counter. Fulks had a point-blank opportunity stopped by the sprawling Gustie keeper.

The game-winning goal came at 37:45. Concordia was unable to clear the ball far enough away on a shot from inside the penalty area. The ball caromed out to a wide open GAC attacker who left little doubt with a one-time finish.

Gustavus then doubled their lead at 54:35 on a shot from outside the penalty area.

Gustavus outshot the Cobbers 14-5 in total shots and 9-3 in shots on goal. Cobber goalie Ben Glogoza made six saves and now leads the MIAC in saves in conference play.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will finish the 2015 season when they play at Wis.-Superior on Saturday, Oct, 31 at 3 p.m.
