Welcome To Cobbtober

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/03/15)--- That loud scream you heard coming from the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex at 5:31 p.m. was a month's worth of frustrations being released in one single moment.

Cobber freshman Spencer Lancaster brought the Cobbers out of their September funk when he scored the game-winning goal with 60-seconds left in a 2-1 win over St. Mary's.

Lancaster's first collegiate goal snapped a six-game losing streak and gave Concordia its first conference win of the season.

The Cobbers set the tone for the new month in the second minute of the first half. Concordia won a throw-in deep in the St. Mary's defensive end. Sage Thornbrugh's long throw was flicked on by senior Nick Koerbitz and junior Matthew Fulks ran on to the flick pass and headed it into the net.

It was Fulks' first goal of the season and was only the third goal scored in the first half of play for Concordia on the season.

The Cobbers continued to pressure the Cardinal defense on the wing and wound up outshooting SMU 6-4 in the first half.

St. Mary's would tie the game at 34:24 when a Cardinal attacker broke behind the CC defense on the left wing and scored on the breakaway.

The second half was filled with quality chances for both teams. Neither team was able to post the go-ahead goal as errant shooting alignment, or great goalkeeping, kept the score deadlocked at 1-1.

St. Mary's best chance came in the 85th minute but Cobber goalie Ben Glogoza came up with the diving save to keep the score all even.

Cardinal goalie Evan Claffy then did Glogoza one better as he came up with a quick-reflex save from Thornbrugh's volley from eight yards out.

Lancaster won the game at 89:00 when the ball was cleared out of the SMU penalty area. The ball came to Cobber freshman defender Ben Olson. Olson then played a high ball over the top of the St. Mary's defense.  Koerbitz was able to get a touch on the ball and Lancaster ran behind the SM back line and collected the ball all alone from nine yards out. He settled the ball and then slotted the ball on the ground past Claffy who was rushing out to cut down the angle.

The goal set off a celebration that had been a month in the making.

St. Mary's finished the game with a 14-11 edge in total shots while both teams had seven shots on goal.
CC enjoyed a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Glogoza finished the 90 minutes with six saves and earned his second win of the season.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS: The Cobbers are now 2-2 at home in 2015. Both of the Concordia wins this season have been by identical 2-1 scores. CC is now 2-0 when they hold their opponent under two goals.

WHAT'S NEXT? The Cobbers will have a week to prepare for their next game. CC will hit the road and travel to Northfield to take on Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m.
