Late-Game Rally Falls One Short

STORM LAKE, Iowa (9/20/15)—Concordia continues to dig a hole they can't get out of. For the third straight game the Cobbers conceded the first two goals and lost.

Concordia fell behind Buena Vista 3-0 less than 20 minutes into the second half, staged a furious late-game rally but fell one goal short and lost 3-2.

The Cobbers had a pair of quality chances in the opening minutes of the second game of their home/away doubleheader. Sophomore Austin Promersbeger was tripped up on a breakaway just outside the Buena Vista penalty area and then Joe Thomas narrowly missed getting on the end of a crossing attempt just yards outside the BVU goal line.

The early-goal giveaway monster then reared its ugly head as Concordia allowed the opening goal of the game on a corner kick. The Beavers score at the 9:50 mark would be the only goal of the first half.

The second half turned into a track meet as the teams raced up and down the field. The two squads combined for four goals in the final 45 minutes of play.

Buena Vista busted the game wide open with two goals in a span of seven minutes. The Beavers scored their second goal of the game on a counterattack at 52:57 and then added the eventual game winner on a seeing-eye shot from 25 yards out at 59:56.

The Cobber comeback would start at 60:21 when Promersberger scored his first collegiate goal. Promersberger finished off a passing combination from Jacob Schmidt and Nick Solheim.

Like their game on Saturday against Macalester, the Cobbers got to within goal with just over five minutes to play in regulation. And like their conference game against the Scots, CC pushed hard for the game-tying goal.

Senior Nick Koerbitz tapped in his second goal of the season from close range and the Cobbers were within one goal at 3-2. Koerbitz' goal at 84:13 was assisted by Schmidt who now has six points in the team's last four games.

Concordia had a pair of dead ball opportunities in the final minutes of play but couldn't come up with their third goal.

Buena Vista had a 12-9 edge in total shots with the team even in shots on goal at four.  CC goalie Alan Scheuermann made one save in the game.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a six-day break before returning to action when they host St. Olaf on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.
