Defense Takes A Holiday In MIAC Opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/16/15)—Defense took a holiday in Concordia's conference opener at Hamline. The Cobbers allowed three goals in the first 53:40 of play and dropped a 3-0 decision against the Pipers.

The three-goal loss drops the Cobbers' overall season record to 1-5. Hamline ups their overall mark to 2-3-1.

Hamline controlled the early moments of the game before Concordia was able to get up to speed and respond to the Pipers central midfield play. The Cobbers came up with the first quality chance of the game. After a CC throw-in was cleared towards midfield, the Cobber defense played the ball wide and then Concordia was able to cross the ball past the Piper defense. Seniors Dami Adegunle and Nick Koerbitz found themselves in a 2-on-0 situation but couldn't control the cross and get a solid chance on net. The ill-fated shot slid just wide of the right post.

The Cobber golden opportunity at 18:37 proved to be the theme for Concordia's first-half attack as they created several great chances but couldn't get the ball in the net.

Hamline notched the eventual game-winning goal at 29:59 when the ball was sent to the wide right side of the penalty area from a cross off the left wing. A wide open Piper attacker then headed a looping ball into the far side netting.

The Pipers would add a back-breaking second goal 5:22 before the break. Once again a Hamline attacker was able to knock home the goal from a wide-open position. The goal came off of a rebound from the left post. The initial shot was taken from the top of the penalty area in the middle of the field. The ball then hit the left post and two Hamline attackers ran on to the rebound before a CC defender could react to the opening shot.

The Pipers finished off the scoring in the 54th minute of play. Concordia tried to push forward in the attack in the final 30 minutes of play but could never find a way past the Piper keeper.

Hamline held a 14-4 edge in total shots and a 7-1 margin in shots on goal. The Cobbers came away with a 6-5 lead in corner kicks.

Concordia goalie Ben Glogoza was credited with four saves for the 90 minutes.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will host Macalester at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19. The game will be a part of the annual Family Weekend celebration.
