Offense Rules The Day

DULUTH, Minn. (9/12/15)—Playing their second game in less than 24 hours, Concordia came out on the wrong end of an offensive showcase and lost 4-2 at St. Scholastica.

The Cobbers staked the Saints to a pair of goals in the first 36 minutes of the first half and then got to within 2-1 at the break before conceding the fourth goal of the game less than four minutes after halftime.

Concordia was able to get to within one goal only 24-seconds after Scholastica made it 3-2 but then a goal in the final minute of play gave the Saints the two-goal win.

The loss ends Concordia's one-game winning streak. CC is now 1-4 on the season. Scholastica goes to 4-1-0 for the year.

Sage Thornbrugh and Jacob Schmidt posted the goals for the Cobbers. Thornbrugh scored at the 40:06 mark of the opening half. Thornbrugh's goal came on a corner kick and was assisted by Julian Wilhelm. It was Thornbrugh's second goal of the season which ties his season mark in all of 2014.

Schmidt notched his first collegiate goal on a great set-up down the right wing. Senior Dami Adegunle broke free down the right side and crossed the ball toward the face of the goal. The ball bounced once before Schmidt came running onto the cross and hammered a left-footed volley into the roof of the net. Adegunle earned his first assist of the year on the goal at 49:16.

Cobber goalie Alan Scheuermann made 15 saves in goal for the Cobbers.

STAT STUFF
Concordia has now allowed seven goals in the second half of play in 2015. The Cobbers have given up at least one goal in the second period in four of the five games this year. The goal by Thornbrugh in the first half was only the team's second of the season in the opening 45 minutes of the game.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS
Thornbrugh has only scored in one half of play in all three seasons he has played for Concordia. Both of his goals this year have come in the first half of play. Last year he scored both of his goals in the second half of play. Thornbrugh had two goals in his freshman season and both came in the first half of games.

QUOTABLE
"I like the way we played on offense today. We created chances and responded to their two-goal leads very well. The character of this team to fight through adversity is going to help us once we start play in the MIAC." – Head Coach Ben Schneweis on the team's effort on Saturday.

WHAT'S NEXT
Concordia will begin MIAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when they travel to St. Paul to take on Hamline at 5 p.m.
