Another Close Call Goes Awry In The Final Minute

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/28/14)—Concordia conceded a goal in the final minute of the second half and lost 2-1 at Macalester on Tuesday. The game looked like it was headed for overtime until a last-minute quick throw-in conversion ended the contest with only 44-seconds remaining.

The loss is another in a string of one-goal, heartbreakers for the Cobbers. Concordia is 2-4-1 in their last seven games and has scored 10 goals and given up 10 goals during that stretch. With the win, Macalester clinches a spot in the upcoming MIAC playoffs. The Scots have now won three straight games and are 10-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in league play.

Concordia had the best chance of the opening half in the first minute of play. The Cobbers connected passes in the middle of the field and then sprung freshman midfielder Jacob Schmidt on the right wing. Schmidt turned the corner and got to the end line. He then hammered the ball across the face of goal. Dami Adegunle ran on to the cross and redirected the ball just over the crossbar from six yards out.

Macalester scored the only goal of the first half after a shot from 40 yards out caromed off the crossbar and went straight out to the top of the penalty area. A second shot then went over the top of CC goalie Ben Glogoza and then dipped under the crossbar.

Concordia tied the game in the 59th minute of play. Sophomore Matthew Fulks found himself played the ball around a defender and then pounded the ball off the crossbar from seven yards out. The ball deflected to the right side of the penalty area where Joe Thomas shot the ball back across the goal and Fulks was waiting to finish off the second chance. The goal at 58:50 was Fulks' team-leading third of the season. Thomas picked up his second assist of the year.

The game went back-and forth until the final minute of play when Macalester broke off a quick throw-in and gained the end line on the left wing the ball then went through the first wave of attackers and settled on to an attacker just outside the penalty area who fired a low shot that went through the group of players in the front of the net and into the goal.

One of the biggest plays of the game came in the 72nd minute when the Scots had a free kick just outside the penalty area on the left wing. The service was driven in on the ground where a Macalester attacker ran on to the cross and flicked it towards the corner of the goal. Glogoza came up with a cat-quick stop as he dove to his right, stuck his big paw out and redirected the ball around the outside of the goal post.

Concordia will now finish off the regular season when they play at St. John's on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m.
