An Offensive Present On Senior Celebration Day

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/21/14)—The offensive dam finally burst. After struggling to find the back of the net for the first 13 games of the season, Concordia unleashed a flow of five goals in their 5-1 win over Buena Vista on the annual Senior Celebration game.

The Cobbers entered the game having scored just 10 goals in their first 13 games of the season. They hadn't scored more than two goals in any game. Like the unseasonably nice weather, Concordia's offense was sunny and warm for the entire 90 minutes.  CC scored two goals in the first half in a span of 1:51. The Cobbers then added three more in the second half in a stretch of 11:51.

The new-found, quick-strike offense helped produce Concordia's second win of the season. The Cobbers are now 2-1-1 in their last four games as the freshmen and sophomore dominated team continues to improve.

After each team had a couple of opportunities in the first 30 minutes of the opening half, Concordia finally got on the board with a nifty give-and-go combination through the middle of the field. Sophomore Matthew Fulks gained possession of the ball in the middle of the field. He then played the ball forward to Dami Adegunle. Adegunle gave it back to Fulks who proceeded to go right up the gut of the Buena Vista defense. He got behind the defense and slotted the ball past the goalie at the 35:39 mark. It was Fulk's second goal of the season.

Adegunle would double the Cobbers' lead 1:51 later when he took a centering pass from midfielder Jacob Schmidt and went "bar down" for his first goal of the season. Adegunle's shot was hammered off the underside of the crossbar and bounced straight down behind the goal line. It would be the first of two helpers for Schmidt on the day.

Concordia would wait until midway through the second half to put the game away. The Beavers pushed to get within a goal in the first 15 minutes of the second period. The CC defense withstood the charge and then the quick-strike offense added three more.

Freshman Nick Solheim scored his first collegiate goal when Schmidt tight-roped down the right end line and threaded a perfect pass to Solheim who tapped in the "bunny" to give the Cobbers a 3-0 lead.

Concordia vs. Buena Vista Video Highlights

The Cobbers would score two goals in a span of 1:26 just four minutes later. Sage Thornbrugh scored his first goal since Sept. 7 when he pounded a shot from the top of the penalty area. His shot caromed off the leg of a Buena Vista defender. The deflection put top spin on the ball and it rolled over the top of the goalie and under the crossbar. Solheim and Luis Martinez earned the assist on the goal at 72:32.

Adegunle would finish off the Cobber scoring at 72:32. He broke free of the Beaver defense when he collected a pass from Thornbrugh and sprinted free on the left wing. He calmly waited for the goalie to come out and tapped the ball into the net. Senior captain Jon Tetlie also recorded an assist on the play.

Buena Vista scored the final goal of the game in the 83rd minute of play when Axel Shema headed home a ball delivered off of a corner kick.

Concordia outshot Buena Vista 15-3 in total shots for the game.  For the second straight game the Cobber defense limited their opponent to a single shot in the first half. CC wound up with nine shots on goal for the game. Schmidt and Thornbrugh both had a game-high four shots on the day.

The Cobbers split the goaltending duties. Freshman Alan Scheuermann started the game, played the first 79:40 and stopped the only shot he faced. Junior Jesse Partee played the final 10:20.

Concordia will have a short turn around to relish their five-goal game. The Cobbers will play at Minn.-Morris on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m.
