Clearing The Goalie But Not The Goal Line

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (10/15/14)—For the second straight Wednesday, Concordia went to overtime with a conference opponent. Unfortunately for the Cobbers the second midweek OT thriller wouldn't end with a positive result. CC gave up the "golden goal" with only 15-seconds left in the first extra period and lost 1-0 at Bethel.

The overtime loss ends the Cobbers' two-game unbeaten streak. Concordia is now 1-1-1 in their last three games. Bethel wins for the second straight game and moves to 6-9-0 overall and 2-5-0 in league play.

While the game was decided by a head goal in overtime, it was a pair of defensive plays that allowed the Royals to get through regulation tied at 0-0. Concordia had a pair of shots get past the goalie only to be cleared off the goal line right before the ball rolled into the net.

The first "oh so close" chance came in the first half when freshman forward Roland Oyou shot the ball from six yards out on the right side of the BU goal after the ball had been bounced around the penalty area. Oyou's shot beat the goal. However, a defender slid back behind the keeper and knocked the ball out of the net just before it cleared the right post.

The second chance was the best opportunity for either team in regulation. Junior Dami Adegunle received the ball at midfield on a counterattack pass. He turned and raced down the right wing. In his sprint towards the goal he was able to beat the Bethel central defender and break free towards the goalie. Adegunle then hammered a shot towards the far post that whistled past the keeper. Once again a Royal defender was in the right place at the right time as he sprinted toward the left post and was able to keep the ball out of the back of the net with one last ditch effort.

Adegunle was credited with a team-high three shots.

CC had two other all alone in-close quality chances. Luis Martinez settled a ball in the penalty area but his shot went right to the goalie. Senior defender Jon Tetlie had a free head ball at the six-yard box but his attempt also sailed into the arms of the waiting goalie.

For the second straight game the Cobber defense heled an opponent to under 10 total shots for the 90-minute regulation period. Concordia held Bethel to nine shots in the opening 90 minutes of play.

Cobber goalie Ben Glogoza was credited with eight saves on the day.

Concordia will look to get the ball over the line when they host Buena Vista on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m.
