Tetlie And Cobbers Streak Past Hamline

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/11/14)—Concordia was glad to have one streak end on Wednesday and now hopes a trio of other streaks, which were extended on Saturday, will keep going.

The Cobbers used a pair of goals from dead ball situations to beat Hamline 2-1. The win is the first of the year for CC and extends their unbeaten streak to two games. The victory also extends Concordia's unbeaten streak against Hamline to seven games. The 2-1 win also marks the second straight game the Cobbers have scored more than one goal.

The victory also gives Concordia a much-needed three points in conference play. The Cobbers are now 1-4-1 in the MIAC and jump into eighth place in the MIAC standings.

One streak that Concordia hopes to put a stop to is falling behind in the first half of play. For the seventh straight game the Cobbers conceded a goal in the first 20 minutes of play in the first half and trailed 1-0. Hamline got on the board first after a Concordia defender handled the ball in the penalty area and the Pipers were awarded a penalty kick.

The one-goal deficit didn't faze the "new attitude" Cobbers and less than three minutes later CC scored their first dead ball goal to tie the game at 1-1.

Concordia was awarded a free kick just inside their offensive half of the field. Senior defender Justin Flack delivered a long ball into the Hamline penalty area. Junior defender Nick Koerbitz then flicked the initial service deeper into the penalty area where Jon Tetlie was able to win another header and direct it down and just inside the left post. The goal, at the 22:09 mark, was the first of the year for Tetlie and came just 2:29 after he stepped on the field for the first time since Sept. 20.

The Cobbers then finished off the final 22 minutes of the first half with a flurry of offensive action which included a string of four straight corner kicks in the final five minutes of play.

Concordia would come up with the game-winning goal in the first five minutes of the second half. Once again the Cobbers earned a free kick just inside their own offensive half. Flack once again took the kick and lofted it into the middle of the Hamline penalty area and once again a CC defender was the first person to the delivery. Dan Streeter went to the ball and had it bounce off his stomach. The deflection caromed right to teammate Matthew Fulks who calmly buried the ball into the middle of the net from seven yards out. Fulks' goal at 48:40 was his first of the year and matches his total from the 2013 season.

The Cobber defense would limit Hamline to a single shot in the second period of play. The Pipers were able to hold the majority of the possession as CC defended their one-goal lead but did not allow Hamline to get space to earn a shot.

Concordia wound up outshooting Hamline 8-4 in total shots for the game and had a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.
Ben Glogoza made a pair of saves to earn his first win of the season. It is also the first time all year that the Cobbers have held an opponent under two goals.

Concordia will look to extend their trio of streaks when they play at Bethel on Wednesday, oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
