Once Again It's Too Little Too Late

MOORHEAD, Minn.  (9/05/14)—For the second straight game Concordia gave up a single goal in the first half, dropped into a 3-0 hole in the second half but then staged a late rally only to lose 3-1. The Cobbers dropped their 2014 home opener to Wis.-Superior in the opening game of the annual Cobber Invite.

The teams played even through the first 45 minutes of the game. The difference in the first half was a seeing-eye shot from the top of the penalty area that eluded several players before finally settling in the bottom right corner of the net. Both teams had four shots on goal in the first half.

The game turned in the Yellowjackets favor in a span of eight minutes in the middle of the second period. The first goal of the two-goal "nail in the coffin" came off of a corner kick. One of the Superior players was able to break free from his defender and headed home a wide open chance from six yards out. The Yellowjackets extended their lead to three goals when a forward made a diagonal run through the middle of the CC defense and was able to get free on a breakaway from 18 yards out. He then hammered the ball past onrushing Cobber keeper Ben Glogoza.

Concordia got on the board in the 86th minute when freshman forward Roland Oyou jumped on an errant clearing attempt and beat everyone to the ball to head home his first collegiate goal. The tally was the Cobbers' second in three games. Both Concordia goals on the year have come from first-year players.

The Cobbers put together a late-game flurry for the second consecutive game and had a chance to get within a single goal in the 88th minute when one of the CC forwards found himself all alone in front of the goal but couldn't punch home the finishing shot.

Superior outshot Concordia 17-12 in overall shots and 11-8 in shots on goal. Glogoza had a season-high eight saves in the contest while UWS keeper Matt Elder stopped seven of the eight shots he faced.

Cobber sophomore forward Matthew Fulks had a team-high three shots in the game.

Concordia will finish off the Cobber Open when they host Simpson (Iowa) on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.
