Cobbers Earn NSCAA Team Academic Award

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/21/13)—The Concordia men's and women's soccer teams earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award. The Cobbers were one of only 182 schools which had both their men's and women's programs recognized.

The award, which encompasses all of NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA schools, is awarded to teams who posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2012-13 academic year. In all, a total of 862 college soccer teams (269 men, 593 women) earned the soccer coaches academic award.

The Cobber men's team finished the 2012-13 season with a team grade point average of 3.00. The Concordia women earned the award by carrying a 3.46 GPA. CC was one of six men's programs in the MIAC to earn the award while the women's team was one of eight conference schools to earn the recognition.

The Cobber men's program has shown steady growth in the first two years under head coach Ben Schneweis. Concordia was 5-12-1 in 2013 and won a pair of conference games. The Cobbers lost or tied six one-goal games. Midfielder Sage Thornbrugh became the first Concordia freshman to earn All-Conference or All-Conference Honorable Mention honors since the 1995 season. CC started nine different freshmen or sophomores throughout the season.

The women's team continues to be one of the premiere programs in the region. Led by first-year head coach Kevin Roos, Concordia finished with another 10-win season and earned another trip to the MIAC playoffs. The Cobbers went 11-7-1 in all games and were 7-3-1 in conference play. CC earned their 11th straight berth in the conference playoffs – the longest streak of any team in the MIAC. The Cobbers had six players earn conference postseason honors.
