Dominant Defensive Effort Done In By All-American

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/26/13)—Concordia battled defending MIAC champion Carleton through 90 scoreless minutes of regulation time and nine minutes of overtime before finally getting beat by an All-American effort.

The loss drops Concordia to 5-10-1 overall and 2-6-0 in league play. Carleton is now unbeaten in its last 10 games and is 9-0-1 during that streak. The Knights are now 12-3-1 in all games and 6-1-1 in the MIAC. The win also clinches a conference playoff spot for Carleton.

The Cobbers, winners of four of the last five games, showed their ever-growing confidence by standing toe-to-toe with the league's premier program. Concordia's defense stifled the high-powered Knight offense and only allowed Carleton to put up seven total shots in the game. That is the fewest shots by the Knights this season and fewest since the end of the 2011 season.

Neither team had quality chances set up by long periods of possession. Both defenses limited the numbers of chances throughout the game. Carleton had a shot hit the post in the fifth minute of play but that would be the closest they would come until the game winner in overtime.

The game winning goal would be a candidate for "Goal of the Year" at any level. Sophomore All-American Branden McGarrity hit a full volley from 16 yards out that went off the underside of the crossbar and bounced down behind the goal line. The goal came on a corner kick after a Carleton player had flicked the initial crossing ball.

Concordia had three shots in the game. Freshmen Matthew Fulks led the team with two shots.

The Cobbers used two goalies in the game. Freshman Ben Glogoza started the contest and played the first half. He sustained an injury in the first 45 minutes of play and then senior Peter Runquist played the final 54:14. Glogoza made one save in the first half.

Concordia will finish off the 2013 season with a pair of home games. CC will host Macalester on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. and then St. John's on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3 p.m.
