Newcomers Light Up Monday Night Fútbol

STORM LAKE, Iowa (10/21/13)—The future looks bright for Concordia as a pair of newcomers made a huge impact in the Cobbers' 1-0 win at Buena Vista on Monday night.

The victory is the fourth in the last five games for Concordia and it marks the first time all season that the Cobbers have recorded back-to-back shutouts.

The two newcomers who stepped into the spotlight on Monday Night Fútbol were sophomore wing Dami Adegunle and freshman goalie Ben Glogoza.  Adegunle tallied his first game-winning goal as a member of the Cobbers and Glogoza made two saves to record his first collegiate shutout.

The one-goal win was the fourth of the season for Concordia and improves their overall record to 5-9-1 on the year.

Concordia had the run of play for the first half and for most of the second half. The Cobbers were able to control the ball in the middle of the field against Buena Vista and limit the Beavers chances due to a swarming defense. CC outshot BVU 12-5 in the first half and was able to get the ball in the final third of the field on several occasions.

The two best chances of the first period came off the feet of a pair of other newcomers for the Cobbers. Freshman wing Alex Van Bemmelen hammered a right-footed shot of the inside of the left post in the 40th minute of play. Instead of caroming into the net, the ball ricocheted of the post and outside the Buena Vista penalty area. Fellow freshman Sage Thornbrugh then danced his way past a pair of Beaver defenders and broke free in the penalty area. Unfortunately his breakaway attempt at 41:42 slid just wide of the right post.

Glogoza came to the rescue with less than two minutes left in the opening period. He was forced to make his biggest save of the game when a BVU attacker got behind the CC defense on the left side and fired a low shot as Glogoza was coming out to meet the play. Glogoza then dove on the ground and smothered the shot before it could get behind him.

The scoreless draw at halftime would last until the 10th minute of the second half. Thornbrugh fed senior Michael Forston on the left side of the penalty area. Forston then snaked a low crossing pass through the penalty area where Adegunle was waiting wide open on the right wing. Adegunle settled the ball and then slid the ball past the Buena Vista keeper towards the far side of the net. Adegunle's goal at 56:06 was his second of the year. The assist for Thornbrugh was his team-leading seventh of the season and gives him 11 total points for the year. He is now tied for the MIAC lead in assists.

The Cobbers slowly went into a full-out defensive mode in order to protect their one-goal lead. The Cobbers did not surrender a shot attempt in the final 25 minutes of play but Glogoza was called upon to make several key crossing catches.

Concordia finished the game by outshooting Buena Vista 19-7. The 19 shot attempts ties for the second highest of the season for CC. The Cobbers also enjoyed a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.

The Cobbers will now finish off the 2013 season with three straight conference games at home. Concordia will host defending MIAC co-champion Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
