Milestones And Season Highs In Win At Presentation

ABERDEEN, S.D. (10/20/13)—Concordia headed south for mid-semester break and found the southern climate to their liking as they put up 51 shots and scored five goals en route to a 5-0 win at Presentation (S.D.) on Sunday.

Concordia has now won three of its last four games and moves to 4-9-1 on the season.

The game featured several milestones and season highs for the Cobbers. The 51 total shots is a season high and the most by a Cobber team since the 1994 season. Concordia also put up 38 shots on net which is also the most since 1994. The five goals scored for CC is the most in 2013 and most since 2010. The third goal for the Cobbers was scored on a penalty kick marking the first time in 45 games that Concordia had been awarded a spot kick. Finally, the shutout is the first of the year for the Cobbers.

The individual milestones came from a pair of freshmen who recorded their first collegiate goals. Midfielder Sage Thornbrugh scored a pair of goals in the first half to get on the stat sheet and Matthew Fulks capped off the scoring in the second half with his first collegiate tally.

It took the Cobbers awhile to get on the board. CC dominated the game from the opening tap and needed 20 shots and almost 22 minutes to get the opening goal of the game. Senior forward Brett Wegleitner looped a half volley over the goalkeeper's head to put CC up 1-0 at the 21:52 mark. Senior Michael Forston and Fulks set up Wegleitner's opener.

Concordia then added three goals in the next 23:06. The three goals in the second half of the opening period is more than CC had scored in a full 90 minute game in 2013. Thornbrugh put the Cobbers up 2-0 when he took a throw-in from senior Bobby Spoja and smashed it into the roof of the net from eight yards out. It was Thornbrugh's first collegiate goal after knocking on the doorstep for 13 straight games.

Wegleitner would then earn the penalty kick foul and take the ensuing spot kick in the 41st minute of play. The last penalty kick awarded to Concordia was on Sept. 11, 2011 a streak that reached 45 games. CC's streak was the longest of any team in Division III west of St. Louis. Wegleitner made good on the rare occurrence to secure his team-leading 11th goal of the season. That is the most for a Cobber player since All-Region forward Riley McGlynn tallied 16 in 2010. Wegleitner now has 23 points on the season. He currently leads the MIAC in total goals and is tied for third in overall points.

Thornbrugh capped the first-half scoring in the waning seconds when he spotted the Saints goalie off his line and proceeded to ship the ball over the keeper and under the crossbar from 35 yards out. Freshman Luis Martinez was credited with his first collegiate assist on the play.

Concordia was able to get 22 different players in the game in the second half. Fulks earned his first collegiate goal on a dead ball from outside the penalty area. Fulks hammered his direct kick off the wall and the ball caromed into the net to give the Cobbers a five-goal cushion at the 75:33 mark.

The Cobbers had 33 total shots in the first half and 18 in the second and wound up outshooting Presentation 51-10. CC also enjoyed a 38-6 margin in shots on goal.

Concordia split the goalkeeping duties between Ben Glogoza and Jesse Partee. Glogoza started the game, played the firs 65:20 and made five saves. Partee entered the game in the second half and stopped one shot in his first collegiate appearance. Glogoza was credited with the win and is now 2-0-1 on the season.

The Cobbers will finish off their 2013 non-conference schedule when they play at Buena Vista on Monday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
