Oh So Close In St. Peter

ST. PETER, Minn. (9/21/13)—Concordia battled defending MIAC co-champion Gustavus for 83 minutes in a scoreless tie until a goalmouth, pinball scramble determined the outcome and gave the Cobbers a 1-0 loss.

Concordia conceded possession for most of the game but was able to organize defensively and hold the Gustavus offense at bay and limit the number of quality chances. And when the Gusties did break free of the Cobber defense, CC senior goalie Peter Runquist was equal to the task and kept the scoreboard tied at 0-0.

The Cobber offense had a pair of quality chances that would have swung the momentum of the game but a shot by sophomore Dami Adegunle went wide and Gustie keeper Brett Ylonen made a pair of saves in the second half.

The game-winning goal was set up on a dead ball situation from the top of the penalty area. After a Cobber defender was called for a shoulder-to-shoulder foul at the top of box, a seeing-eye shot found its way on net and the ensuing rebound was knocked around before a Gustavus attacker came up with the loose ball and knocked it home for the goal.

The goal in the 84th minute gave Gustavus the 1-0 lead but Concordia would have the last shot of the game but a Justin Flack offering was turned aside by Ylonen.

Concordia was outshot 20-5 in overall shots and 13-3 in shots on goal. Runquist came away with 12 saves on the day.

The Cobbers will stay on the road in conference play when they travel to St. Thomas to square off against the Tommies on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.
