A Game Of Last-Minute Chances

KENOSHA, Wis. (9/14/13)—Concordia battled with perennial CCIW playoff participant Carthage for an entire 90 minutes but fell one finish short and lost 2-1 on Saturday.

The Cobbers, who fought through 109 minutes of play on Friday night to earn their first win of the season, were tied with the Red Men late in the second half when a miscue on a defensive throw-in allowed Carthage to break through to the CC defense on a 3-on-2 situation and a shot from Michael Dombrowski found the lower right corner of the net at the 82:58 mark.

The Cobbers had a golden chance moments before the Red Men's game-winning goal but a breakaway attempt was shot just over the bar.

Concordia (1-4-1) got behind Carthage in the 20th minute when a Red Men defender got free on a corner and buried the open chance into the top left corner of the net. The Cobbers had a quality chance headed away from goal in the 35th minute when freshman Matthew Fulks hit a volley after the Carthage goalie got caught out of the net. The ball was headed into the vacated goal but a Red Men defender was able to get back and head the ball away from the net.

The Cobbers finally got on the board in the final minute of the first half. A Concordia throw-in deep in the Carthage defensive end was flicked to the back post and senior Brett Wegleitner was able to one-touch the ball home for his team-leading third goal of the season.

Each team had quality chances in the second 45 minutes of the game but it was Carthage who buried the final open opportunity to win the game.

The Red Men (5-2-0) outshot Concordia 20-6 in total shots for the game with Carthage holding a 10-4 margin in shots on goal. While the Cobber defense gave up more shots, the majority were taken from on top, or outside, the penalty area.

Concordia used two keepers in the game. Freshman Ben Glogoza started the contest and made three saves. Senior Peter Runquist played the second half and stopped five shots in 45 minutes of play.

The Cobbers will now head into conference play. CC will have a week off before their MIAC opener at Gustavus on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 2:30 p.m.
