603 Miles Of Offense And A Win

KENOSHA, Wis.  (9/13/13)— It took 603 miles for Concordia to get their first win of the year and find their offense but that's what happened as the Cobbers beat Robert Morris-Lake County 2-1 in two overtimes in Kenosha, Wis. on Friday.

It didn't look like Concordia would find the recipe for success on the eastern edge of Wisconsin as they fell behind for the fifth straight game. The Cobbers conceded a penalty kick goal in the 24th minute which marked the fifth straight time that CC has given up the opening goal of the game.

Concordia steadily worked their way into the game and by the second half was holding a dominant edge in possession time. Having only scored two goals in their first four games of the year, the Cobbers were nervously pressing for the equalizer. The tying goal came in the 61st minute when a pair of seniors combined to level the game. Midfielder Matt Glogoza found Brett Wegleitner on a through ball at the top of the Eagle penalty area and Wegleitner hammered a shot past the RMU keeper at 60:56.

The goal would be a part of the second-half offensive blitz for the Cobbers as they outshot Robert Morris 14-3 in total shots and 6-0 in shots on goal. While shots were aplenty, CC still struggled to come up with the game winner and was forced to go to overtime.

The Cobbers continued their offensive presence in the first extra session and had the only two shots of the 10-minute period. It wasn't until the final minute of the second overtime when CC could settle the game and come away with their first win of the season.

The game winner came after a missed clearance by an Eagle defender in the RMU penalty area. Concordia senior Kristian Reiersgord was able to beat everyone to the loose ball and then fired a shot past the RMU keeper who was starting to come for the ball. The goal at 109:28 was Reiersgord's second in as many games and set off a jubilant celebration by the Cobbers .

Concordia wound up outshooting Robert Morris 27-10 for the game. The 27 shots are the most for a Cobber team since the fourth game of the 2010 season when CC put up 47 against Crown on Sept. 11. Concordia also had a 13-5 edge in shots on goal against the eagles and an 8-5 margin in corner kicks. Freshman Luis Martinez led CC in shots with a total of six.

Cobber keeper Peter Runquist made four saves in the game to earn his first win of the season.

Concordia will stay in Kenosha and take on Carthage College on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
