A Pair Of Penalty Kicks Leads To 3-0 Loss

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (10/20/12)—Concordia was on the wrong end of a pair of penalty kicks and fell 3-0 at St. Olaf on Saturday. The Cobbers conceded all three goals in a span of 22:18 in the first half and fell for fourth time in the last five games.

The game was less than six minutes old when Concordia fell behind 1-0. A crossing pass was finished off
by a wide open Ole attacker. The goal at 5:18 forced CC to chase the game for the remainder of the contest. Things got worse for the Cobbers when St. Olaf was awarded two soft penalty kicks less than seven minutes apart and went from one-goal deficit to a three-goal hole. Both spot kicks were converted by 2011 MIAC MVP David Rosenthal after an Ole attacker fell in the penalty area. Concordia has now had seven penalty kicks whistled against them while not having taken a single spot kick on the year.

St. Olaf had several other quality chances as they went on to outshoot the Cobbers 26-10 in total shots. The Oles also enjoyed a 17-4 edge in shots on goal.

Concordia had opportunities from in-close in both halves. Junior forward Kristian Reiersgord had two chances in the first half. Both came on high balls played after a header. He flicked a shot with his head after a crossing pass which cause the St. Olaf goalie to have to dive full out to his right to make the save. The second came after a bouncing ball in the penalty area. After the ball bounced, Reiersgord went to make a play on it from seven yards out but was taken down from behind by an Ole defender.

The best chance of the second half came when sophomore midfielder Jannick Bettels got in behind the St. Olaf defense on the right wing. His lofted shot beat the Ole goalie but sailed just over the crossbar.

Cobber goalie Peter Runquist made 14 saves in the game. Harry Ullmann stopped four shots to pick up the shutout.

Concordia will close out the 2012 season by hosting Augsburg on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 3:30 p.m. and then playing at St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
