Cobbers Come Up Short On Counterattack Wednesday

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/10/12)—Concordia scored one counterattack goal but gave up two and lost 3-1 to Jamestown in Moorhead on Wednesday. The game was the Cobber's third in the past four days and less than 20 hours after stepping off an 11-hour bus ride.

The Cobbers gave up two goals in a span of 14 minutes in the first half but then played even with the Jimmies for the final 64 minutes.

The loss is the third straight for the Cobbers and closes out their non-conference schedule for the year. CC is now 5-9-0 on the season and finishes with a 3-5-0 mark against non-league teams. Jamestown snaps a two-game losing streak and moves to 11-2-0.

Playing with several starters on the bench, Concordia allowed the only non counterattack goal of the game in the 12th minute of play. Jamestown then started the counterattack goal theme when they raced the length of the field after CC had a throw-in chance in the Jimmie defensive end.

Concordia tried to get to within goal throughout the final 19 minutes of the first half and then into the second half but were unable to produce a sustained offensive attack. The best chance for the Cobbers came when senior midfielder Sam Rydell ran onto a ball on the left side of goal and slid the ball into the net after a service from Jannick Bettels but he was ruled to be in an offside position and the goal was disallowed.

Jamestown sealed the game in the final 22 minutes of play. Once again Concordia got caught in the offensive end and a Jimmie attacker dribbled for 40 yards and slotted a shot into the lower left corner of the net.

The Cobbers scored their only goal of the day on a two-pass scoring combination that went from Rydell to Olivier Toussaint and wound up on the foot of senior Matt Winkels who beat the Jamestown goalie with a low shot. For Winkels it was his second goal of the season.

Concordia split the goalkeeping duties between Peter Runquist and Josh Jurek. Runquist started the game, played the first 45 minutes and made one save while Jurek finished off the final 45 minutes and stopped four shots.

The Cobbers will head back into MIAC play when they travel to Arden Hills, Minn. to square off against Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
