ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/03/12)—Sophomore German midfielder Jannick Bettels connected on an "ESPN Top 10 Plays of the Day"-caliber goal in the eighth minute of overtime to give Concordia a 2-1 win over Macalester in St. Paul on Wednesday.

The two teams battled through the first 90 minutes of play deadlocked at 1-1 before Bettels took control of the ball 40 yards out from the Scot goal on the left wing. He was able to beat a defender to the inside and then hammered a dipping shot from 30 yards out that went over the top of the Macalester goalie and dropped underneath the crossbar. The game-winner at 97:42 was Bettels' first collegiate goal.

The dramatic extra-time win snapped a four-game losing streak for Concordia. The Cobbers earn their second league win of the season which is one more than they had in 2011. CC is now 2-4 in MIAC play and 5-6 overall. The five wins matches the win total from all of 2011. Macalester sees their overall mark fall to 2-8-1. The Scots are now 2-3-0 in league games.

Concordia controlled the play in the opening half as they were able to connect through the midfield and get the ball wide in order to create scoring opportunities around the Macalester penalty area. The renewed offensive play was rewarded in the 20th minute of play when defender Jon Tetlie poked home a rebound from five yards out. Tetlie's shot was the culmination of a goalmouth scramble that saw CC get three chances from inside the six-yard box. Kristian Reiersgord was credited with the assist on Tetlie's first collegiate goal.

The Cobbers continued to create chances in the first 45 minutes of play and held a 6-3 edge in shots for the first half.

Macalester was able to take control of the game in the second half as the Cobbers tried to defend their one-goal lead. The Scots were close to equalizing several times in the period but finally tied the game with under 10 minutes to play. Paul Lind headed home a cross from a free kick from 50 yards outside of goal. Lind's looping header from the right side of the penalty area was able to elude Cobber goalie Peter Runquist's outstretched fingers and fall just under the crossbar.

Concordia went close to scoring in the final four minutes of play. The first chance came on a crossing attempt that went all the way through the Scot six-yard box just out of the reach of a pair of CC attackers. The second chance came right at the end of regulation when sophomore midfielder Justin Flack's shot from 20 yards out sailed just over the bar.

That set the stage for Bettel's heroics. Neither team was able come up with any quality chances before Bettels won the game on his career shot.

Macalester held an 18-13 edge in total shots for the game with 13 of those coming in the second half. The Cobbers had a slight 4-3 edge in shots on goal for the game.

Runquist made two stops for the Cobbers to earn his 22nd career win. Jesse Yourish was also credited with two saves in goal for Macalester.

Concordia will now head east for a pair of non-conference games. The Cobbers will play at Augustana (Ill.) on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. and then head to Elmhurst, Ill. To take on Elmhurst College on Monday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.
