Start Of Second Half Stymies Cobbers

WINONA, Minn, (9/29/12)—Two goals in a span of 5:20 crushed Concordia's chances of a critical conference road win as the Cobbers fell 2-1 to St. Mary's in Winona.

The Cardinals netted goals at the 46:53 and 52:13 marks to break open an even game and come away with the MIAC victory. The Cobbers got to within one in the 74th minute but were never able to come up with an equalizer in the final 15 minutes of play.

The loss is the fourth straight for Concordia and drops their overall record to 4-6. CC is now 1-4 in conference. St. Mary's wins for the second time in the past three games and ups their overall record to 4-6 and league record to 2-3.

The Cobbers held the edge in the first half, coming away with a 7-4 margin in total shots. The game changed less than two minutes after the halftime break when a SMU attacker was able to collect a rebound from 12 yards out and knock the ball into the lower left corner of the net. That same scenario would take place less than six minutes later when Jamie Zepeda netted his second rebound goal after CC goalie Peter Runquist had successfully dealt with the initial shot.

Cobber senior Jared Rice got Concordia back in the game when he scored his fourth goal of the year at the 73:19 mark. Justin Flack served the ball to Rice who put home the goal to get CC within one at 2-1.

Concordia was unable to get a shot on goal in the final 10 minutes of play. The Cobbers were even up a man for two minutes after a St. Mary's player was shown a red card after receiving his second yellow card in the 88th minute.

Concordia finished the game with a 16-14 edge in total shots for the game. St. Mary's had a better shooting touch as they held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Runquist made eight saves on the day while Christian Van Dam turned aside four shots to pick up his second win of the season.

The Cobbers will look to stop their losing skid when they play at Macalester on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
