Banana Slugged
SANT CRUZ, Calif. (10/24/11)—Concordia
conceded four first half goals and lost to UC-Santa Cruz 4-1
in Santa Cruz, Calif. on Monday. Senior Riley
McGlynn notched the only goal of the game for the
Cobbers.
The game pivoted around a pair of five-minute periods in the
opening half. The first critical junction came at the start of the
game as Concordia left their legs on the beach and allowed two
goals in the first 5:44. The Banana Slugs got on the board just :49
into the game when Cody Pillon hammered a show
into the lower left corner against CC goalie Andy
Iverson. Santa Cruz struck less than 5:00 later on an
unassisted goal by Brock Kobayashi.
The Cobbers were able to hold back the rising tide and kept Santa
Cruz off the board for the next 33:00. CC was almost able to escape
the first half down only 2-0 but then the Banana Slugs clicked for
two more just before the break. Ben Middlemiss
pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area and slammed it into the
upper corner at 38:43 and then Brent Godlewski
fired home a shot from 25 yards out to cap the first-half scoring
just 2:13 later.
Concordia (5-9-2) showed up in the second half and outscored the
Banana Slugs in the final 45 minutes. McGlynn broke free at the
15:42 mark and slotted home his team-leading sixth goal of the
season. He has now scored in three of the last four games for
CC.
UC-Santa Cruz (8-7-0) held a decisive edge in shots for the game.
The Banana Slugs put up 26 total shot as compared to only 10 for
the Cobbers. Santa Cruz enjoyed a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Both teams had two corner kicks in the game.
The Cobbers split the goalkeeping duties. Iverson made six saves
in the first half and then Peter Runquist kept
UCSC off the board in the second half and stopped six shots. The
Banana Slugs also split the goalie job. Nate
Levinson made two saves in the first half and
David Vivian made two stops but gave up one goal
in the second half.
Concordia will now return to Minnesota and play at Augsburg on
Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6:15 p.m.
