Second Half Surge Stops Jamestown
JAMESTOWN, N.D. (10/11/11)—Jared Rice and
Michael Fortson scored second-half goals and
Concordia went on to beat Jamestown 2-1 in Jamestown on Tuesday.
The win snaps a five-game losing streak for the Cobbers.
It took Concordia (4-7-1) until the second half to get on track.
The Cobbers were outshot 7-4 in the first half and did not have a
corner kick. The momentum would shift at the start of the second
half when CC put up three of the first five shots of the final 45
minutes. After a Forston shot went wide, the Cobbers were able to
pin the Jimmies in their own and then Alex Cyusa
was able to find Rice who knocked the ball into the net.
Rice’s first goal of the year put Concordia up 1-0 at the
58:50 mark.
The Cobbers stumbled around for the next nine minutes as they
settled into defend mode. Jamestown posted three shots in that
time. Concordia finally righted the ship around the 71-minute mark
and then started to once again attack the Jimmie net. The pressure
paid off in the 82nd minute when Forston pounced on a
rebound after a Riley McGlynn shot and buried the
game winner at 81:02. Like Rice, it was Forston’s first goal
of the season. For McGlynn it was his team-leading fourth assist on
the year and eighth overall point.
Jamestown (6-5-0) finally got on the board as time expired in the
second half. After the Jimmies were awarded a free kick, the
ensuing service into the penalty area was knocked into the net by
Dominic O’Connor.
The Jimmies held a 16-12 advantage in overall shots in the game
and a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. Concordia had three corners in the
second half which allowed JC to gain a 4-3 margin in corners for
the game.
CC goalie Peter Runquist made eight saves to earn
his fourth win of the year. Jamestown goalie Thomas
Cooke stopped five shots in the loss.
The Cobbers will return home to host Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 15
at 1 p.m. as part of the annual Homecoming celebration.
