McGlynn Shines In Homecoming Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/15/11)—Riley McGlynn scored two goals and had an assist as Concordia rolled to a 3-1 win over Bethel in the annual Homecoming game on Saturday. The win is the first conference victory of the year for the Cobbers who move to 5-7-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the MIAC.

It was a perfect start to the game for Concordia. McGlynn set up Jared Rice in the fourth minute of play and Rice connected on his second goal of the year. They Royals responded by netting the equalizer less than three minutes later and the game was tied at 1-1 with just 6:28 gone in the opening period.

The game would stay tied until just before halftime when McGlynn struck for the first of his two goals in the game. Rice returned the favor as he, and Bobby Spoja set up McGlynn for the eventual game-winner at the 43:51 mark. It was McGlynn’s third goal of the season and took the life out of Bethel.

The late first-half goal would help CC carry the momentum into the second half. The Cobbers refused to allow another game-tying goal and then added an insurance goal in the final 10 minutes of play. McGlynn finished off an assist from freshman Justin Flack to give Concordia their first three-goal game of the year. It was also the first time this season that McGlynn has scored more than one goal in a game. Last season he had five multiple-goal games.

For the second straight game Concordia gave up a single goal and came away with the win. The Cobbers conceded a goal on the very first BU shot of the game but then held strong for the final 83 minutes of play.

The Cobbers outshot Bethel 16-10 in overall shots and 11-5 in shots on goal. It is only the second time this season that Concordia has had at least 10 shots on goal in the game.

CC goalie Peter Runquist made four saves to earn the win and Bethel keeper Chris Scott had eight saves in the loss.

Concordia will stay at home when they host St. Olaf on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 1:30 p.m.
