Cobbers Severely Damage Auggie Playoff Hopes
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (10/26/11)—Concordia
and Augsburg battled through 110 minutes without scoring a goal and
the teams had to settle for a 0-0 2OT tie. The tie severely damages
the Auggies playoff hopes as they fall into fifth place in the
league standings – one spot out of the four-team playoff
race.
Each team had chances to win the game during regulation and the
two overtime periods but each time were either thwarted by the
opposing team’s goalie or defense. The Cobbers had a golden
opportunity in the second half on a corner kick. One of the CC
attacking players won the ball cleanly with his head and the shot
went past the Auggie goalie but was cleared off the line by the AC
defender who was covering the post. Then in both overtime periods,
Cobber senior forward Riley McGlynn was played
clear of the defense and was able to break in on goal, but both
times his shots just missed the target.
Augsburg also had several great opportunities in the 110 minutes
but their best chances were either snared by CC goalie
Peter Runquist or cleared off the line by a Cobber
defender.
The Auggies had a decided advantage in total shots and corner
kicks for the game. Augsburg outshot Concordia 33-9 for the contest
and held an 18-4 edge in corner kicks. AC also had 13 shots on goal
as compared to only three for the Cobbers.
Runquist made 10 saves for Concordia to pick up his fourth shutout
of the season. Auggie goalie Will Morlock stopped
two shots.
