Olson's Late Goal Give Cobbers 2-2 Tie At St. Mary's

WINONA, Minn. (12/7/24)---Hunter Olson's goal with 5:22 left in the third period gave Concordia a 2-2 tie at St. Mary's after the teams skated through a scoreless overtime session. 
 
The game goes in the record books as a tie but St. Mary's wins an extra point in the MIAC standings because of a 1-0 win the 3-shot shootout. 
 
The Cobbers and Cardinals combined for 87 shots on goal in a game that never had more than a 1-goal margin. 
 
Concordia (4-6-1, 1-4-1 MIAC) opened the scoring when junior Joe Harguindeguy 1-timed a rebound into the back of the net after CC was staked to a power play at the 2:13 mark of the opening frame. 
 
The goal at 2:28 was Harguindeguy's second of the year with Blaise Miller and Mason Plante earning the assists on the opener. 
 
The 1-0 lead would hold up until midway through the first period when the Cardinals scored an even-strength goal at 9:28.
 
St. Mary's (5-3-1, 1-0-1 MIAC) scored the only goal of the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
 
The game would stay at 2-1 until the final 5 minutes of regulation. Once again the Cobbers were sent to the power play. A holding call at 13:22 gave CC the man advantage and OIson tied the game 1:16 into the PP opportunity. 
 
The game-tying goal was similar to the Cobbers' opener because it came off of a rebound and led to a 1-time shot for the score. Olson fought his way free in front of the net and was in the perfect spot to knock home the rebound after Hanson O'Leary's initial offering was stopped by the SMU goalie. 
 
The goal was Olson's second of the season and O'Leary and Caden Triggs were awarded the assists. 
 
The teams would skate through the final 5:22 of regulation and an additional 5 minutes in overtime without coming up with a game winner. CC held a 4-2 edge in shots in the OT period.
 
The Cobbers held a 46-41 advantage in shots on goal for the game. The 46 shots are the second most this season.
 
Dane Couture made 39 saves in goal for Concordia.
 
The Cobbers will have a 3-week break before returning to action on Friday, Jan. 3 when they host Marian at 5 p.m.
