One Answer Short

STORY LINE: Concordia came up one goal short as they tried to answer St. Thomas for the fourth straight time and lost 5-4. The Cobbers came back from 1-goal deficits on three different occasions but then allowed two consecutive goals in the third period and dropped the final decision.    

RECORDS: Concordia earns a pair of points on the weekend on the road and is now 11-7-3 overall and 7-3-2 in the MIAC. The Cobbers have 25 league points. St. Thomas is now four points behind CC in the standings as they are 5-1-4 in the MIAC and 11-4-4 overall.

I WANT TO DRIVE THE BROKEN ZAMBONI: The teams had to play through a very snow-filled ice sheet as the Zamboni broke in between periods and the rink staff was forced to hand shovel the ice before the start of the third period.

BRACKO DOUBLES UP: Freshman Jacen Bracko had his first multi-goal game for the Cobbers. He scored the team's first goal of the game at 5:54 of the opening period which tied the game at 1-1. Bracko then finished off the scoring when he brought the Cobbers to within one goal at the 15:02 mark of the third period. Bracko now has nine goals and six assists on the season and is fourth on the team in total points.

TIE GAME DUO: Matt Donnelly and Aaron Herdt both had game-tying goals in the second period. St. Thomas took a 2-1 lead at the 5:50 mark of the middle frame and then Donnelly tied the score at 2-2 just 25-seconds later. The Tommies then broke to a 3-2 lead at 10:31 before Herdt countered with the third game-tying goal 2:34 later. Donnelly's goal was his second of the season and Herdt put up his team-leading 14th nugget of the season.

CHASING DOWN A RECORD: Sophomore transfer Tyler Bossert had an assist on the Cobbers' first and third goals and now has 27 assists on the season. His total of 27 assists is 10 shy of the single-season record set by John Town in 1990.

STAT STUFF: St. Thomas outshot the Cobbers 38-32 in the game and both teams were 1-for-3 on the power play. Mario Bianchi had a team-high five shots on goal for CC. Junior goalie Jacob Stephan made 33 saves on the day.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have a rare 2-week break before returning to action when they host Gustavus on Feb. 8-9 at the Moorhead Youth Rink. The Gusties are 7-13-1 overall and 4-7-1 in the MIAC and are holding on to the final playoff spot in fifth place with 13 points.
