A Cup Of Joe

STORY LINE: Junior Joe Burgmeier scored a pair of goals and added an assist to help Concordia beat St. Mary's 5-3 in Winona and remain unbeaten in MIAC play. The Cobbers and Cardinals traded goals in the first two periods of play before Concordia netted the final two tallies in the third period to come away with a crucial road win.

RECORDS: Concordia puts a stop to its 2-game losing streak to start 2019 and is now 10-4-2 in all games. The Cobbers are now 6-0-1 in conference play and two points out of first place in the league standings. St. Mary's, who hadn't played a game in over a month, is now 2-10-3 overall and 1-4-2 in the MIAC.

WAY TO GO JOE: Joe Burgmeier entered Saturday night's game having only scored two goals the entire season. He equaled that total in 25 minutes of play. He put Concordia on the board first when he scored just 10-seconds into the first period. His second goal of the game gave the Cobbers a 3-2 lead at 4:28 of the second period. Burgmeier also picked up an assist on CC's second goal when Tyler Bossert gave the Cobbers a 2-1 lead midway through the first period. Burgmeier had six total points in the first 15 games of the year and now has nine.

BRACKO BACK BREAKER: Concordia newcomer Jacen Bracko scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period. He recorded his second game winner of the season at the 11:37 mark. Tanner Okeson earned his second assist of the game on the play. Bracko now has six goals and five assists for 11 points on the year.

HELPING HAND: Junior Quinn Fuchs extended his point streak in the series opener. Fuchs recorded the second helper on Bracko's game winner and has now scored at least one point in seven straight games. Fuchs has had a single assist in all three games in 2019 and now has a goal and eight helpers on the season for nine total points.

SHORTHANDED STOLEY: Sophomore Alex Stoley finished off the scoring in the game on Friday when he snaked home an empty-net goal at 19:10 of the final frame. That was his second goal of the season and both have come when the Cobbers have been down a skater on the ice. His first goal came when CC was shorthanded against Hamline on Dec. 7.

STAT STUFF: Concordia outshot St. Mary's 42-36 in the game. That margin included a 17-7 edge in the decisive third period. It marks the third time this season that the Cobbers have had at least 40 shots on goal in a game. They also put up 40-burgers in both games of their sweep against St. Olaf.

POWERLESS PLAYS: Neither team scored a power play goal in nine chances. The Cobbers were 0-for-5 and St. Mary's was held off the board in their four attempts. CC is now 0-for-13 on the power play in the last two games.

BACK TO HIS WINNING WAYS: Junior goalie Jacob Stephan made 33 saves to earn the win in goal for CC. He was the goalie of record in last Friday's 3-2 loss against No.1-ranked Wis.-Stevens Point. Stephan had won five straight starts before that game. Stephan is now 8-2-1 on the season.

UP NEXT: The two teams will finish off their 2-game series in Winona on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. Concordia is 5-1-1 in games played on a Saturday this season.
