Engineering A Comeback Win

RECORDS: The Cobbers extended their unbeaten streak to six games and their win streak to four games. CC is 4-0-2 during that stretch. The 6-game unbeaten streak is tied for the seventh best in DIII. Concordia is now 7-2-2 overall. It's the first time the Cobbers have been five games over .500 since the 2006-07 season when they beat Wis.-River Falls 2-1 on Jan. 7 to move to 9-4-0 on the year. Milwaukee School of Engineering falls for the third straight game and is now 2-6-1 on the year.

WHO ARE THESE GUYS: The Cobbers fell behind 2-0 midway through the first period before a trio of scoring newbies put Concordia up 3-2 in the ninth minute of the second period. Freshman defenseman Tanner Breidenbach started the comeback quest when he scored his first collegiate goal on the power play at 10:40 of the first period. Quinn Fuchs and Blake Berg were credited with the assists on CC's first goal of the game. Sophomore Keaton Leininger tied the game when he banged a 1-time shot off the right post and into the net at the 5:36 mark of the second period. Leininger transferred from SUNY-Plattsburgh and it was his first goal as a Cobber. Junior Jake Ellingson then scored his first goal of the season at 8:03 while CC was killing off a penalty to give Concordia a 3-2 lead. Ellingson was set up by Fuchs who raced the length of the ice on a breakaway and then dished the puck to Ellingson at the last second.

WE'LL TAKE IT FROM HERE: The Cobbers' M-A-T line members then took over the game to finish off the scoring. Aaron Herdt notched his ninth goal of the year when he sniped a goal on the power play at 8:23 of the third to give Concordia a 4-2 advantage. Tyler Bossert made the nifty cross-ice feed to set up Herdt. MSOE got to within a single goal at the 15:04 mark before Bossert, the leading scorer in the MIAC, finished off the game when he slid home an empty-net goal at 19:11.

MULTIPLE-POINT MAYHEM: Tyler Bossert now has five goals and 16 assists for 21 points on the year. He has scored in 10 of the team's 11 games and has seven multiple-point games. Bossert leads the MIAC in scoring and is third in Division III in total assists. The Cobber school record for assists in a single season is 37 set by John Town in 1990.

GOALS, GOALS, GOALS: Concordia's five goals push their league-leading total to 40 for the season. The Cobbers have scored at least four goals in four straight games and eight of their 11 this year. CC is tied for 14th in the nation in scoring this year.     

SPECIAL TEAMS SAUCE: Concordia scored a pair of power play goals and added a shorthanded while blanking MSOE on their two power play chances. The Cobbers have scored five power play goals in their last three games and have nine PP goals this season. CC leads the MIAC in power play percentage as they are successful on 25.0% (9-for-36) of their attempts. Concordia is second in penalty kills – holding opponents to just a 9.3% success rate. The Cobbers' lead the MIAC in combined special teams, and are second in Division III in that statistical category.

CAM MAN: Sophomore goalie Cam Haugenoe stopped 34 shots to earn his second win of the season. He started slowly – allowing two goals in the first seven shots he faced – but then found his groove and turned aside 22 straight shots. The streak of 22 included a side-to-side kick save stop in the second period. Haugenoe has a 2.43 GAA and a 92.1% save percentage this season.

UP NEXT: Concordia will only have a 1-day break before putting their unbeaten streak on the line. The Cobbers will host Hamline in the final MIAC series of the 2018 portion of their schedule on Dec. 7-8. The Pipers are 2-7 overall but 2-2 in MIAC play and have wins over St. John's and Gustavus in two of their last three conference contests.
