Threes Are Wild In Big Win In St. Peter

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/09/18)---Threes were wild on Friday night in Concordia's series opener at Gustavus. The Cobbers scored three unanswered goals to beat the Gusties 4-2, grabbed three huge points in the conference standings and had three players with multiple-point games.

Concordia trailed 2-1 with 4:20 gone in the second period in St. Peter but then tallies from Jon Grebosky, Alex Stoley and Dalton Mills gave CC the win and pushed the team a step closer to clinching its sixth straight trip to the MIAC playoffs.

The Cobbers are now 6-6-1 in league play and have 20 points in the standings. Concordia is currently holding down the fifth, and final, playoff spot but CC is only one point behind Gustavus who is in fourth place in the standings. Concordia is now 9-10-3 overall. The Gusties are now 7-6-0 in the MIAC and 8-11-3 in all games.

The teams traded goals in the first period. Gustavus opened the scoring with a power play tally at the 9:30 mark of the opening frame. Sophomore Joe Burgmeier countered that goal with his second of the season at 14:13. Quinn Fuchs and Tanner Okeson earned the helpers on the game-tying goal.

The first-period scoring scenario would play out in the first six minutes of the second period after the teams skated to the first intermission deadlocked at 1-1.

Gustavus scored first at 4:20 and then Grebosky answered with a power play goal at 5:24. Beau Wilmer and senior strike mate Zach Doerring set up the second game-tying goal.

Stoely, a freshman defenseman, picked the perfect time to score his first collegiate goal as he earned the game winner at 17:48 of the second period. Wilmer and Burgmeier both earned their second point on the night when they were added to the assist column.

Concordia shut down the Gustavus attack in the neutral zone in the third period and only allowed eight shots on goal in the final 20 minutes of play.

Mills finally gave the Cobbers some breathing room when he filled up the empty net at 19:22. Doerring was given the assist on the final goal to make it a trio of multiple-point players for CC.

Concordia outshot Gustavus 37-32 for the game. Grebosky accounted for almost 25-percent of those shots as he put up a game-high nine on target.

The game was a clean affair with only two penalties called for the entire 60 minutes. Both teams scored on their only power play chance of the game.  

Jacob Stephan made 30 saves in net for CC and recorded his fifth win of the year.
