Friday Night Right

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/09/17)---For the second straight Friday Night, Concordia was able to post a 3-2 win over a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opponent.

The Cobbers scored a pair of goals in the third period and held off Wis.-River Falls 3-2 in Moorhead. Last week Concordia won 3-2 at Wis.-Stout. The two Friday night wins give the Cobbers a two-game win streak and push the team's season record to 2-1-1.

Concordia got season-first goals from Mark Huneke, Dalton Mills and Bryan Kronberger to get the victory. For senior Huneke it was his first-ever collegiate goal.

The game was an even affair that featured end-to-end rushes and few penalties. The teams combined for 51 shots with River Falls holding a slight 26-25 edge. There were only five penalties called in the game and neither team could score on their two power-place chances.

Perhaps the biggest moment of the game came midway through the second period when Concordia killed off almost a full two-minute 5-on-3 man advantage. UWRF was only able to get off only three shots on goal during that time as the CC penalty killers worked hard to nullify the two-man edge.

Concordia never had more than a one-goal advantage in the game as the score differential reflected the play on the ice.

Huneke knocked home a rebound in the first period to stake the Cobbers to a 1-0 lead. River Falls responded with a goal to tie the game at 1-1 just before the first break.

Neither team scored in the second frame before Mills hammered home a shot from the left faceoff circle at 3:53 of the third. The Falcons then responded with another game-tying goal at 7:40 before Kronberger had a bar-down game winner at 8:21.

Shane Gingera, Aaron Ryback, Jake Ellingson, Joe Burgmeier and Quinn Fuchs had assists in the game for Concordia.

Cobber goalie Sam Nelson turned aside 24 shots to record his first win of the year.

Jon Grebosky led all players with four shots on goal for CC. Burgmeier, Kronberger and Zach Doerring all had three shots each.

WHAT'S NEXT: The teams will finish off their opening non-conference series on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
