MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. (2/04/17)--- This time there would be no give and take, no back and forth. Less than 24 hours after Concordia beat St. Thomas in a game where the teams traded goals the Cobbers allowed four goals in the third period and lost 5-0.

Concordia entered the third period trailing by a single goal but then a trio of goals less than four minutes apart at the back end of the period put the game out of reach.

The split in the series with the Tommies gives the Cobbers a 12-8-1 overall record and a 6-5-1 mark in league play. CC holds on to the fifth, and final, playoff place in the MIAC standings with four games left in the regular season. League-leading St. Thomas is now 11-6-4 in all games and 9-2-1 in the conference.

St. Thomas was looking to avenge the overtime loss in the first game of the series on Friday from the opening drop of the puck. The Tommies outshot the Cobbers 18-7 in the first period but the play of freshman goalie Sam Nelson kept CC tied at 0-0 heading into the second frame.

Nelson finally cracked in the second minute of the second period when UST scored an even-strength goal at 1:08.

Concordia wasn't able to get its offense on track and went scoreless on their two power play opportunities in the middle frame.

The Cobbers pushed for the equalizer early in the third period and were denied on a power play that started at the 2-minute mark . CC had a pair of shots on goal before giving up the back breaker at 7:17 on the power play.

St. Thomas would then put the game out of reach with three goals in a span of 3:54 starting at 14:16. The goals at 14:16, 15:50 and 18:10 were all even strength tallies.

Concordia was outshot 47-20 in the game with Nelson making 42 saves in the game. Jordan Christianson led the Cobbers with four shots on goal. Freshman defenseman Eddie Eades had three shots.

WHAT'S NEXT:  Concordia will host its final home series of the regular season next weekend. The Cobbers will battle St. Olaf on Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Moorhead Youth Rink. The Oles are 6-13-2 overall and 4-7-1 in the MIAC and are coming off a split with Bethel.
