First Period Haunts Cobbers

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (11/12/16)--- Concordia skated to a 1-1 tie with No.13-ranked Wis.-Eau Claire for the final 40 minutes of its game on Saturday. Unfortunately a four-goal first period by the Blugolds sent the Cobbers to a 5-1 loss.

The four-goal outburst by Eau Claire marked the second straight game that the Cobbers have given up four straight against a nationally ranked team and paid the price. On Friday CC allowed four consecutive goals to No.1-ranked Wis.-Stevens Point and fell 6-3.

The losses to the nationally ranked teams even Concordia's overall record for the year. CC is now 3-3-0 in all games. Eau Claire ups their record to 3-1-2 for the season.

The Blugolds did most of their damage in the first 11:10 of the opening period. Eau Claire scored the first goal at 4:34 then added the second at 8;12 and took control of the game with the third goal at 8:12.

Concordia settled down in the second period as the teams skated through a scoreless 20 minutes of play.

The Blugolds and Cobbers traded goals in the second half of the third period. Eau Claire went ahead 5-0 at 12:14 before senior Jordan Christianson got the Cobbers on the board with his second goal of the season at 16:06. The goal came on a power play and the assists went to Jeremy Johnson and Zach Doerring.

Eau Claire outshot 35-16 for the game. Garrett Hendrickson led all CC players with four shots on goal.

Concordia freshman goalie Sam Nelson stopped 30 shots.

The Cobbers were 1-for-7 on the power play while the Blugolds went 1-for-3.

ALL'S HE DOES IS HAND OUT ASSISTS: Cobber senior Jeremy Johnson leads the team in scoring in 2016-17. The strange stat fact is that he has all six points via assists. He has an assist in five straight games and his six helpers are tied for the lead in the MIAC.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a two-week break and then head out east for the Primelink Great Northern Shootout. The Cobbers will start the tourney on Friday, Nov. 25 when they play host Plattsburrgh State. Concordia was the first western team to win the prestigious invite when they played in 2014.
