Not Enough At #1 Wis.-Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (11/11/16)—Concordia gave up four straight goals throughout the first, second and third periods and lost 6-3 to No.1-ranked Wis.-Stevens Point.

The game started out with all the makings for an offensive showcase as both teams scored a goal inside the first five minutes. Unfortunately for the Cobbers their goal-scoring prowess wouldn't kick back in until the third period and they lost by three to the Pointers.

The loss drops the Cobbers' overall record to 3-2-0 on the year while Stevens Point remains unbeaten at 4-0-1.

The Pointers got on the board at the 1:50 mark of the first frame and then Concordia junior Dalton Mills tied the game at 4:47. Mills' team-leading fourth goal of the season was assisted by Mario Bianchi.

The game turned in favor of the Pointers when they scored two goals in a span of 3:57 midway through the first period. Stevens Point would also add a single goal in the eighth minute and a goal at the 6:07 mark of the third period to complete their four-goal bonanza and take a 5-1 lead.

Concordia was able to outscore Stevens Point 2-1 in the final 12 minutes of play in the game. Both of the Cobbers' goals came on the power play. Senior Jordan Christianson netted his first goal of the year at 9:20 with assists from Jeremy Johnson and Zach Doerring.

Doerring then finished off the scoring at 12:19 of the final period. He got help from Christianson and Jordan Krebsbach to bring the final score to 6-3.

The game featured 20 penalties and 57 penalty minutes. Concordia went 2-for-6 on the power play while the Pointers were 1-for-6.

Stevens Point outshot the Cobbers 35-18 in the game. Grebosky, Doerring and Johnson all had three shots each to lead CC.

Cobber freshman goalie Jacob Stephen turned aside 29 shots in his third collegiate game.

MILLS THE MAGICIAN: Junior Dalton Mills found his scoring touch over the summer. Mills entered the year having scored a combined four goals in his first two seasons in maroon and gold. He now has four goals in the first five games.

JUST THE HELPERS MAAM: Jon Grebosky and Jeremy Johnson are tied atop the Concordia scoring list this year. Both players have five points and both have five assists and no goals this season. Grebosky now has 26 career helpers while Johnson has already matched his assist total from all of 2015-16.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will stay on their Wisconsin nationally-ranked road trip. The Cobbers will head west to take on No.13-ranked Wis.-Eau Claire on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Blugolds are 2-1-2 on the year and tied St. John's 3-3 in overtime on Friday.
