Late-Period Goals Prove Costly

ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/15/16)—Late goals in the second and third periods proved to be the difference in Concordia's 6-4 loss at Hamline.

The Cobbers allowed two goals in the final 4:06 of the second period, the game winner and an insurance goal in the final 3:25 of the third period and suffered their first conference defeat of the season.

Concordia is now 4-1-0 in the MIAC and 6-7-1 overall. Hamline runs its unbeaten streak to two games and is now 5-7-4 in all games and 2-4-2 in conference play.

The teams skated through a 1-1 opening period. Zach Doerring put up the equalizer for the Cobbers. He scored his second goal of the year at 15:33 on an assist from Jon Grebosky.

Jordie Bancroft would stake the Cobbers to a 2-1 lead late in the second period but then the Pipers rattled off two power play goals to take a 3-2 lead into the third period.

Bancroft earned his third goal of the year at 15:03. Tucker Coborn and Jake Zeleznikar picked up the assists on the go-ahead tally.

The lead only lasted 45-seconds. A major penalty for contact to the head put Hamline on the power play and the Pipers took advantage of the 5-minute man-advantage situation. HU scored at the 15:54 and then again just 10-seconds before the end of the second period to grab a 3-2 lead heading into the break.

Bryan Kronberger tied the game at 3-3 midway through the period only to have Hamline retake the lead 17-seconds later. Jordan Christianson was credited with the assist on Kronberger's second goal of the year at 9:06. CC found themselves chasing the game at the 9:23 mark when HU notched their fourth goal of the game.

A goal by freshman Mario Bianchi at 13:34 tied the game at 4-4 and set the stage for the Pipers' late-game heroics. Doerring and Grebosky had the assists on Bianchi's team-leading sixth goal of the year.

The Pipers came away with the game-winning goal at 16:35 and then put the game out of reach with their sixth score at 17:03.

Concordia was outshot 35-30 for the game with CC sophomore goalie Alex Reichle making 29 saves in the game. Grebosky had a team-high five shots on goal for the Cobbers and Bianchi was close behind with four shots.

SCORING WAYS RESUME
After being held off the scoresheet in the previous game against Wis.-River Falls, Jon Grebosky recorded two assists. Grebosky has tallied at least one point in five of the past six games and has three multiple-point contests during that stretch. Grebosky leads the team in scoring six goals and nine assists for 15 points.

POWER PLAY?
Concordia's woes on the power play continued. The Cobbers went 0-for-4 on the man-advantage against the Pipers and have now been held without a power play goal for 11 games. CC is 2-for-54 on the power play this season and is scoreless in their last 43 power play attempts.
