Straight To The No.2-Ranked Point

Moorhead, Minn. (11/13/15) --- No.2-ranked Wis.-Stevens Point showed off its national power by rolling over Concordia 5-0 in the home opener for the Cobbers.

The Pointers steamrolled the Cobbers for three goals in the second period en route to the five-goal win.

The Cobbers have their two-game win streak come to a close and are now 3-2-0 for the year. Stevens Point remains perfect for the season and is now 5-0-0.

A 10-minute stretch wrapped around the first intermission spelled doom for Concordia. The Pointers scored the opening goal of the game on the power play and then added a back-breaker just five seconds before the end of the first period to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Stevens Point then pulled away for a three-goal edge when they scored an even strength goal only 4:15 into the middle frame.

The Pointers would tack on two more goals in a span of 41-seconds at the end of the second period to bring the final total to 5-0.

The third period was played between the blue lines with Stevens Point content to bring four players back to avoid giving up any odd men rushes.

The teams combined for only six shots in the final 20 minutes of play with CC holding a 4-2 edge. The teams had put up 46 shots in the first two periods before the defensive clamps were applied in the final stanza.

One of the biggest advantages for UWSP in the game was their ability to break out of their own zone and accelerate through the neutral zone without being slowed down or touched. Concordia gave up several odd man rushes and were saved on several occasions in the first and second periods by sophomore goalie Alex Reichle.

Reichle started the game and played the first two periods. He made 22 saves in 40 minutes of play. Freshman Donald Oldreive stepped between the pipes in the third period and stopped both shots he faced in his first collegiate appearance.

Jeremy Johnson had a game-high four shots on goal for the Cobbers.

Concordia was held without a goal in three power play attempts while the Pointers were 2-for-3 in man-advantage situations.

The Cobbers have only scored one power play goal in the last four games and are 1-for-14 on the PP during that stretch. CC has allowed two power play goals in back-to-back games and opposing eams are now 4-for-6 on the power play in the past two contests.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will get another crack at a nationally-ranked WIAC opponent. The Cobbers will host No.7-ranked Wis.-Eau Claire on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
