Back-And-Forth Game Ends Back In Overtime

WINONA, Minn. (2/13/15)—For the second straight Friday night, Concordia never had a lead for three periods and wound up losing a point in overtime . The Cobbers played a game of back-and-forth at St. Mary's, gave up a goal in the second minute of the extra period and lost 4-3.

The overtime loss nets Concordia a single point in the conference standings. CC now has 25 points in the MIAC with a 7-5-3 record. They fall into a tie for second place with the Cardinals who up their conference record to 7-4-2. CC is now 12-8-4 in all games while SMU moves to 12-8-2.

The opening period started slowly with neither team generating much offense. The teams would combine for only 14 shots on goal in the period. St. Mary's got on the board first when they scored at the 9:55 mark.

The lead would last for almost five minutes when Concordia struck for the first of their two power play goals on the night. The Cobbers' goal started the game-long back-and-forth theme where the Cardinals would score and Concordia would answer less than six minutes later.

Jeremy Johnson tied the game at 1-1 with his sixth goal of the season at the 14:34 mark. Johnson now has four points in the last four games. Andrew Deters and Jon Grebosky earned the assists on the play.

St. Mary's took their second lead of the game midway through the second period. The Cardinals went up 2-1 12:19 and then junior defenseman Charlie Aus tied the game less than six minutes later at 16:36. The goal came on the power play and was Aus' second tally of the season. Defensive partner Rylan Henley picked up one assist and Tucker Coborn record the other helper in the game. Coborn now has four points in the last four games.

The third period would see déjà vu strike again with SMU scoring midway through the period and then the Cobbers gaining the equalizer within six minutes. Jordan Krebsbach got CC back on level terms after St. Mary's took a 3-2 lead at 10:14. Krebsbach's goal at 15:59 was his third of the year with Zach Doerring recording the assist. Like Johnson and Coborn, Doerring also has recorded four points in the last four games.

Unfortunately for the Cobbers, overtime is played as a sudden death so there would be no chance to recover from the Cardinals' fourth go-ahead goal of the game.

St. Mary's finished the game with a 30-26 advantage in shots on goal. CC held a 14-6 advantage in the second period while SMU tilted the rink in the third with a 12-6 edge.

Jordyn Kaufer made 26 saves in goal for Concordia.

CC was 2-for-4 on the power play and has now scored at least one power play goal in the last four games. The Cardinals were held scoreless in their only man-advantage situation.

Concordia will conclude the regular season when they play at St. Mary's on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m.
